Odisha: 10-year-old's rape, murder triggers protests in Bhadrak

The quiet town of Bhadrak in Odisha has been plunged into grief and anger following the alleged rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl, a Class 3 student. The horrific incident has triggered massive public outrage, leading to protests and demands for swift justice.

A Tragic Discovery and Public Outrage

According to police reports, the young girl left her home around 2 pm on Tuesday but did not return. Her worried family, joined by locals, launched a frantic search. Their worst fears were confirmed when they discovered her blood-soaked body near a bush around 8 pm the same evening. The family has alleged she was sexually assaulted and killed.

The news spread rapidly, igniting fury among the community. On Wednesday morning, a large crowd of irate locals gathered to voice their anguish. In a dramatic expression of their anger, they gheraoed (surrounded) the local police station and proceeded to demolish the house of the accused, demanding immediate and severe action.

Police Response and Official Actions

Law enforcement moved quickly to contain the volatile situation and investigate the crime. Bhadrak Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar Rout confirmed that the key accused was arrested from the neighbouring Jagatsinghpur district on Wednesday. Several other individuals have also been detained for questioning.

"A forensic team had visited the spot to assist the police in the investigation. The police are taking all necessary steps. The situation is under control now," stated SP Rout. The victim's body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and additional police forces have been deployed in the town to maintain order.

Responding to allegations from locals that unauthorised liquor shops contributed to such crimes, SP Rout announced a crackdown. "We are taking steps to remove all illegal shops and will take strong action against those involved in unlawful activities. A special drive will be launched to curb illegal liquor and ganja (weed) sale in the district," he assured.

Political Reaction and Compensation

The case has drawn attention from the highest levels of the state government. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has directed the police to ensure stringent punishment for the culprits. In a gesture of support for the grieving family, CM Majhi also announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for them.

The incident has once again highlighted urgent concerns about women's safety and the need for robust mechanisms to prevent such brutal crimes, especially against children, in the region.
