Odisha BJP to Finalize Board Appointments After 18-Month Delay
Odisha BJP to Finalize Board Appointments Soon

The Bharatiya Janata Party government in Odisha is set to end the 18-month-long wait for appointing chairpersons to various boards and corporations across the state. BJP state in-charge Vijaypal Singh Tomar confirmed on Monday that the selection process has reached its final stages.

Selection Process Nearing Completion

Responding to media queries in Bhubaneswar, Tomar revealed that discussions have already taken place at the state level, resulting in a shortlist of potential candidates. The finalized list will shortly be sent to the central leadership for their approval, marking a significant step toward filling these crucial positions.

However, Tomar indicated that while these appointments are imminent, a comprehensive cabinet reshuffle might require additional time. This distinction suggests the government is prioritizing the filling of board and corporation positions that have remained vacant for nearly a year and a half.

Background of the Vacancies

The vacancy crisis stems from actions taken shortly after the BJP formed the government in the state. In June 2024, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi removed all advisors and chairpersons appointed by the previous Biju Janata Dal government, creating numerous empty positions across more than 30 corporations, commissions, and governing bodies.

Among the significant organizations affected is the Western Odisha Development Council, which plays a crucial role in regional development. The last major appointment round occurred in October 2022 under the previous administration, highlighting the extended period these positions have remained unfilled.

Political Implications and Expected Appointments

According to BJP insiders, the prolonged delay has generated growing impatience among party members aspiring to these positions. A senior party member confirmed that the first batch of appointments is expected to be announced shortly, with the selection process carefully balancing political representation against organizational priorities.

Party sources indicate that members who played pivotal roles in the BJP's Nuapada bypoll victory are likely to receive some positions. Former state BJP president and ex-Nuapada MLA Basanta Panda is among those expected to secure a political post. Similarly, senior members Golak Mohapatra and Sukeshi Oram are also anticipated to receive significant positions within the new administrative structure.

The impending appointments represent a crucial step in the BJP's consolidation of administrative control in Odisha, ensuring that key development bodies and corporations finally receive leadership after an extended period of uncertainty.
