Major Infrastructure Boost for Thiruvananthapuram as Long-Delayed Projects Commence

After enduring years of delays and navigating numerous procedural hurdles, two critical infrastructure projects in the state capital of Kerala have finally transitioned from planning to active implementation. The Peroorkada flyover and the Vattiyoorkavu road and junction development are now set to move forward, marking a significant milestone for urban connectivity in Thiruvananthapuram.

Peroorkada Flyover Contract Awarded to Cherian Varkey Constructions

The Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala has officially awarded the contract for the construction of the Peroorkada flyover to Cherian Varkey Constructions Ltd. The formal agreement is expected to be signed imminently, paving the way for construction to begin without further delay.

Preparatory work along the Ambalamukku to Peroorkada Junction alignment, a crucial step for the flyover project, has reached an impressive 95% completion. This includes extensive demolition activities that have cleared the path for the upcoming construction phase.

Vattiyoorkavu Road Development Underway with Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society

Simultaneously, preliminary construction work has commenced on the Vattiyoorkavu road and junction development project. The Kerala Road Fund Board, serving as the implementing agency, has awarded this contract to the Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society.

This award represents a significant breakthrough for a scheme that has faced prolonged delays, finally bringing it to fruition after years of anticipation.

Transformative Impact on Traffic and Connectivity

Both infrastructure initiatives are strategically designed to alleviate congestion and enhance connectivity along key arterial routes that link important areas including Sasthamangalam, Mannarakonam, Vattiyoorkavu, Peroorkada, and Vazhayila.

The Vattiyoorkavu development project, in particular, involves comprehensive upgrades:

  • Widening and upgrading the existing road corridor
  • Enhancing junction design with added footpaths
  • Improving drainage systems
  • Installing modern street lighting

These improvements are specifically aimed at streamlining vehicular movements and significantly boosting pedestrian safety throughout the area.

Official Statements and Project Timelines

Vattiyoorkavu MLA V K Prasanth emphasized the importance of these developments, stating: "These infrastructure works are not just routine road constructions, they are lifelines for thousands of daily commuters. With tenders now floated and land issues largely resolved, we are finally shifting from planning to execution. Peroorkada flyover and Vattiyoorkavu road and junction development will transform traffic flow and connectivity across this part of the city, benefiting residents, businesses and commuters alike."

Prasanth further confirmed that both projects are scheduled to break ground by the end of March. The flyover is expected to be completed within approximately 18 months after work commences.

Expected Benefits and Project Costs

Upon completion, these infrastructure interventions are projected to significantly ease congestion at major choke points, most notably the Peroorkada junction where four critical routes intersect. The improvements are expected to enhance overall travel times for commuters heading toward the city center and beyond.

The financial allocations for these projects are substantial:

  • Vattiyoorkavu project: Rs 531.76 crore
  • Peroorkada flyover project: Rs 106.7 crore

These investments reflect the government's commitment to addressing long-standing traffic challenges and improving urban mobility in Thiruvananthapuram.
