Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held a mega roadshow in Kolkata, covering a stretch of over 7 kilometers from Park Circus to Shyambazar, as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) intensified its campaign for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. The roadshow, which began at around 5:30 PM, saw massive crowds lining the streets, with supporters waving BJP flags and chanting slogans.
Key Highlights of the Roadshow
The roadshow passed through several key areas, including Sealdah, Rajabazar, and Hatibagan, before concluding at Shyambazar. PM Modi, standing atop a specially designed vehicle, waved to the enthusiastic crowds and stopped briefly at multiple points to address supporters. Security was tight, with thousands of police personnel deployed along the route.
Political Significance
This roadshow is seen as a major push by the BJP to gain ground in West Bengal, where the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has been in power since 2011. The 2026 elections are crucial for both parties, with the BJP aiming to unseat the TMC and the TMC seeking to retain its stronghold. PM Modi's roadshow is expected to boost the morale of BJP workers and attract undecided voters.
Reactions from Political Parties
The TMC criticized the roadshow, calling it a 'desperate attempt' by the BJP to gain attention. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, 'The people of Bengal have rejected the BJP's divisive politics. This roadshow will not change anything.' However, BJP leaders expressed confidence, with state president Sukanta Majumdar stating, 'The response shows that Bengal is ready for change.'
Security and Traffic Arrangements
Kolkata Police made elaborate security arrangements, including the use of drones and anti-sabotage checks. Traffic was diverted on several major roads, causing inconvenience to commuters. The police urged people to use alternate routes and avoid the area during the roadshow.
The roadshow concluded peacefully around 8 PM, with PM Modi leaving for the airport to return to Delhi. The event is expected to set the tone for the BJP's aggressive campaign in the state ahead of the 2026 polls.
