Punjab Minister Sanjeev Arora Issues Strict Directives to Accelerate NHAI Projects in Ludhiana

In a high-level review meeting held on Wednesday, Punjab Minister Sanjeev Arora issued stringent directions to concerned officials to expedite progress on critical National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) projects and address key infrastructure challenges in Ludhiana. The meeting aimed to overcome delays and enhance the city's connectivity and safety.

Immediate Actions on Land Acquisition and Payments

The Minister directed the SDM Raikot, who also serves as the Competent Authority for Land Acquisition, to immediately hand over possession of land acquired for the Ludhiana–Bathinda–Raikot Highway to the NHAI. Furthermore, he ordered the prompt release of all pending dues to landowners under this project to prevent further delays and ensure smooth implementation.

Ring Road Development and Connectivity Goals

Emphasizing the strategic importance of ongoing development, Minister Arora stated that three major NHAI projects—Ludhiana-Bathinda, Southern Bypass, and Ludhiana-Ropar—collectively valued at over ₹1,904 crore, will function as a ring road for the city. He highlighted that these projects will significantly enhance connectivity, particularly to the upcoming Halwara Airport. Consequently, the District Revenue Officer was instructed to clear outstanding payments for the Southern Bypass and ensure the remaining land is transferred to NHAI without delay.

Regarding the Halwara Airport, the Minister demanded that all pending works be completed on priority under strict supervision to ensure seamless public road connectivity, thereby boosting regional transportation and economic growth.

Safety and Traffic Management Initiatives

As per the official statement, NHAI and Municipal Corporation officials were directed to prepare a detailed estimate for resolving drainage and rainwater disposal issues at Sherpur Chowk before the monsoon season. Instructions were also issued to ensure adequate lighting on the South City bridge for commuter safety.

The Minister further ordered the beautification of existing bridges and the installation of safety measures such as signage, rumblers, and cat eyes to curb high-speed accidents and improve overall road safety. NHAI officials were specifically tasked with identifying and rectifying black spots across the district to reduce accident-prone areas.

Additionally, authorities were told to devise a permanent drainage and traffic solution for the under-bridge near the Verka Milk Plant on Ferozepur Road, addressing long-standing infrastructure concerns in that area.

Key Attendees and Meeting Outcomes

The meeting was attended by senior officials including Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain, the Additional Deputy Commissioner (G), SDM Raikot, the District Revenue Officer, and the Project Director of NHAI, among others. Their presence underscored the collaborative effort to implement these directives effectively and ensure timely completion of projects for the benefit of Ludhiana's residents and commuters.
