Punjab Press Club Delegation Meets Governor, Raises Media Freedom Concerns
Punjab Press Club Raises Media Freedom Issue with Governor

A high-level delegation from the Punjab Press Club, Chandigarh, held a crucial meeting with Punjab Governor and Administrator of Union Territory Chandigarh, Banwarilal Purohit, on Wednesday to voice serious concerns regarding the state of media freedom and the welfare of journalists in the region.

Key Issues Presented to the Governor

The delegation, led by Press Club President Jagtar Singh and General Secretary Dinesh Kumar, presented a detailed memorandum outlining several pressing issues. The primary focus was on the perceived declining state of media freedom in Punjab. The journalists expressed deep apprehension about the working environment, highlighting instances that they believe curtail the press's ability to function without fear or favour.

Another significant point raised was the safety and security of journalists operating across the state. The delegation underscored the need for a more robust mechanism to protect reporters, especially those working in sensitive or conflict-prone areas, ensuring they can perform their duties without threat to their personal safety.

Concerns Over Infrastructure and Support

Beyond freedom and safety, the memorandum also brought to light the poor condition of press clubs in various districts of Punjab. The delegation argued that these clubs, which serve as essential hubs for journalist interaction and professional development, are languishing due to neglect and lack of adequate support from the state authorities.

The Press Club representatives appealed directly to Governor Purohit for his direct intervention and support in addressing these multifaceted challenges. They urged him to use his office to help create a more conducive and secure environment for the press, which they described as a vital pillar of democracy.

Governor's Assurance and the Path Forward

In response to the submissions, Governor Banwarilal Purohit gave a patient hearing and assured the delegation of his full cooperation. He acknowledged the critical role played by the media in society and governance. The Governor promised to look into the matters raised by the Punjab Press Club and take appropriate steps within his purview to address their genuine concerns.

The meeting, which took place on May 29, 2024, marks a formal effort by the journalistic community in Punjab to escalate their grievances to the highest constitutional authority in the state. The outcome of this dialogue is now keenly awaited by media professionals across Punjab, who hope for tangible improvements in their working conditions and the overall climate for press freedom.
