Rajkot Municipal Corporation Greenlights Major Development Works Ahead of Elections

In a significant pre-election move, the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) Standing Committee has approved a comprehensive package of development projects totaling Rs 470 crore during its final meeting before the upcoming civic body elections. The meeting, held on Thursday, saw the committee clear numerous infrastructure initiatives across nearly all municipal wards, with a strong emphasis on upgrading public utilities and enhancing urban infrastructure.

Major Infrastructure Projects Approved

The committee gave its nod to several crucial infrastructure developments, including the construction of a new road that will connect Raiya Road with the Smart City area. This project is specifically designed to provide commuters with an alternative route and alleviate traffic congestion on existing arterial roads. Additionally, the committee approved the widening of the heavily utilized New Ring Road, which currently suffers from narrow passages and numerous potholes, particularly affecting large vehicles entering the city.

Enhancement of Civic Amenities

To bolster civic amenities in newly developed regions, the Standing Committee sanctioned the establishment of new urban health centers in areas such as SRP Camp and Manharpur. Furthermore, the renovation of the historic Jubilee vegetable market received official approval, marking an important step in preserving and modernizing local commercial infrastructure.

Safety and Residential Initiatives

The committee also focused on urban safety and residential needs by approving the appointment of a consultant to conduct regular structural inspections of all underpasses and overbridges throughout the city. This measure aims to ensure timely maintenance and structural integrity. In a parallel development, plans were finalized for constructing a new fire station behind the Aji Dam traffic police station.

The proposed fire station will feature:

  • Capacity to house six fire tenders
  • A dedicated workshop for vehicle maintenance
  • A modern control room for emergency coordination
  • 64 residential flats for fire department officers and staff located above the station

Financial Scrutiny and Rejections

Despite approving projects worth Rs 470 crore, Standing Committee chairman Jaymin Thakkar revealed that proposals valued at Rs 90 crore were rejected during the meeting. "We rejected the proposals of Rs 90 crore as the tender amounts were found to be unreasonable," Thakkar stated, emphasizing the committee's commitment to financial prudence and transparent governance.

This comprehensive approval of development works comes as the RMC prepares for its new term elections scheduled for April, positioning infrastructure improvement as a central theme in the upcoming civic discourse.
