Roshni Khalkho Elected as Ranchi Mayor with Decisive Victory
Roshni Khalkho has been elected as the new mayor of Ranchi, securing a commanding victory with over 14,000 votes against Congress-backed candidate Rama Khalkho. A 2002 arts graduate from Ranchi University, Khalkho has been actively involved in civic and social work for many years. In an exclusive interview with Shikha Yadav, she detailed her ambitious plans to transform governance in Jharkhand's capital city.
Decentralizing Civic Administration Through Ward-Level Offices
One of Khalkho's primary promises involves a comprehensive administrative overhaul with the establishment of modern civic offices at the ward level. "My focus is decentralization," she emphasized. "Residents should not have to endure long queues at the Ranchi Municipal Corporation headquarters for basic services."
Each ward will feature a fully functional civic karyalaya designed to process certificates, licenses, and complaints locally. These offices will also initiate small-scale public works projects. Khalkho believes this approach will significantly reduce bureaucratic delays, enhance transparency, and ensure faster, more accountable service delivery to Ranchi's citizens.
Concrete Measures to Enhance Women's Safety in the City
Women's safety formed a cornerstone of Khalkho's election campaign, and she has already begun taking concrete steps toward implementation. "I have discussed the critical issue of night patrolling by women police personnel with Union Minister Sanjay Seth," she revealed. "I will pursue this matter vigorously with the state government."
Her safety plan includes:
- Regular police patrolling around hostels and coaching hubs
- Strategic installation of CCTV cameras in by-lanes and sensitive zones
- Formal presentation of these proposals in upcoming municipal board meetings
Pandemic Experience as 'Scooty Didi' Shapes Leadership Philosophy
Known affectionately as 'Scooty Didi' for her extensive relief work during the COVID-19 pandemic, Khalkho's hands-on experience has profoundly influenced her leadership approach. During the crisis, she and her team cooked and served daily meals to 300-400 needy individuals, distributed dry ration kits, delivered medicines and oxygen cylinders to elderly residents, and provided sanitary pads to girls.
"That experience strengthened my conviction that true leadership means direct service, genuine empathy, and rapid response during emergencies," she reflected. This grassroots engagement has prepared her to address urban challenges with practical, people-centered solutions.
Ensuring Smooth Governance Through Collaborative Administration
With ten years of experience as a municipal councillor, Khalkho brings substantial institutional knowledge to her new role. "I have learned how to coordinate effectively with administrative bodies," she stated. "My approach prioritizes collective effort and consensus-building."
She aims to foster harmonious relationships between elected representatives and municipal officials, emphasizing that all stakeholders share the common objective of Ranchi's development through transparent, efficient governance. Her administration will focus on practical improvements that directly enhance residents' quality of life while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
