The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) retained power in Puducherry, thanks to a fragmented opposition, the charisma of All India NR Congress (AINRC) founder and Chief Minister N Rangasamy, and the government's freebies. The NDA secured 18 seats in the 30-member assembly, comfortably crossing the majority mark of 16. The AINRC won 12 seats, its ally BJP secured four, while AIADMK and LJK won one each. The INDIA bloc managed only six seats, with DMK winning five and Congress one. Three Independents also emerged victorious.
Opposition Disunity Bolsters NDA
The opposition parties failed to present a unified front against the AINRC-BJP-AIADMK-LJK combine. Congress fielded candidates in five constituencies allotted to the DMK, causing confusion among party functionaries, cadres, and voters. This internal friction within the INDIA bloc, along with a disoriented campaign and seat-sharing confusion, blunted anti-incumbency sentiment.
Rangasamy's Personal Appeal
Political commentator K Murugan attributed the victory to Rangasamy's 'Makkal mudalvar' (people's chief minister) appeal. He is easily accessible and has an image of a down-to-earth person. His victory in Thattanchavady with an increased margin of 4,441 votes underscores his personal popularity. Rangasamy, who contested and won from two seats, is set to become Chief Minister for a record fifth time.
Welfare Schemes and Freebies
Welfare schemes and freebies also contributed to the NDA's success. The government provided Rs 2,500 monthly aid to women heads of households, free grain, and enhanced deposits under the Girl Child Protection Scheme. These measures resonated with voters across the union territory.
Focus on Cabinet Formation
With the election results declared, attention has shifted to cabinet formation. The BJP is likely to seek the deputy chief minister post as part of the power-sharing arrangement within the NDA. The INDIA bloc's internal strife and lack of coordination are expected to be analyzed as lessons for future elections.
