Maha Vikas Aghad Alliance Finalizes Sharad Pawar as Rajya Sabha Candidate

In a significant political development, the Maha Vikas Aghad (MVA) alliance has officially nominated Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) chief Sharad Pawar as its candidate for the sole winnable Rajya Sabha seat from Maharashtra. The announcement was made on Wednesday, just ahead of the Thursday deadline for filing nominations for the March 16 polls.

Press Conference Reveals Alliance Unity and Underlying Tensions

State Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal, along with party colleague Vijay Wadettiwar and NCP(SP) MP Supriya Sule, addressed a press conference at the Congress office in south Mumbai to declare Pawar's candidacy. Sule confirmed that Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut had visited Pawar earlier in the day, signaling the party's endorsement. Notably, the absence of other Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders at the event highlighted simmering internal discord.

Sanjay Raut later reinforced the alliance's solidarity on social media, stating, "Congress finally took the decision over Rajya Sabha. The MVA is one and will remain together." However, this unity masks a visible rift within Shiv Sena (UBT), where Raut's persistent advocacy for Pawar clashed with Aaditya Thackeray's stance. Thackeray had argued that the seat should go to Shiv Sena (UBT) as the largest party in the alliance, backing incumbent MP Priyanka Chaturvedi.

Political Fallout and Observer Insights

Pawar's nomination is seen as a setback for Aaditya Thackeray and has brought to light the ideological divide between him and Raut. Political observers note that Raut has emerged as a key influencer, effectively setting Shiv Sena (UBT)'s agenda. One observer commented, "Going by Raut's word, it was almost certain the seat would be given to Pawar. In this scenario, the vehement and open attempt to stake claim by Aaditya has caused embarrassment. It seems there is a rift in the thought process in the party... This could have an impact on future nominations and the trust factor of the leadership."

The observer added that while Shiv Sena (UBT) may secure a legislative council seat—vacant next month as Uddhav Thackeray's tenure ends—the Rajya Sabha episode has left a dent in party cohesion.

Congress's Strategic Concession and Future Bargaining

Initially, Congress had strongly claimed the Rajya Sabha seat, arguing it was essential to retain the leader of opposition's post in the upper house. Sapkal revealed, "We initially expressed our strong opinion that we should get the seat and discussed it with Rahul Gandhi during his recent visit to the city. Our party president (Mallikarjun Kharge) decided to support Pawar, and he will be our candidate for the Rajya Sabha polls."

Congress had been negotiating with Shiv Sena (UBT), offering support for the upcoming legislative council seat in exchange. However, Sapkal declined to comment on the party's current position regarding that seat, indicating ongoing discussions within the alliance.

Sharad Pawar's Health and Nomination Logistics

Amid these political maneuvers, Sharad Pawar was discharged from the hospital. Based on medical advice and logistical considerations, his family will decide whether he will visit Vidhan Bhavan to file his nomination or explore alternative arrangements.

This nomination not only solidifies MVA's unity ahead of the polls but also underscores the complex dynamics and internal challenges facing its constituent parties, particularly Shiv Sena (UBT), as they navigate future electoral strategies.
