CM Siddaramaiah: Basavanna's Principles Vital While Caste System Persists
Siddaramaiah: Basavanna's Ideals Key Amid Caste System

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah Stresses Basavanna's Enduring Legacy in Fight Against Caste

In a powerful address at the Basava Jayanti celebrations in Mysuru, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah declared that the principles of 12th-century social reformer Basavanna will remain critically relevant as long as India's stagnant caste system continues to exist. The event, organized by the Federation of Basava Organisations at Kalamandira, saw the presentation of the prestigious 'Basavashree Award-2026'.

Awards and Recognition for Following Ideals

During the ceremony, Siddaramaiah congratulated Siddharama Sharana for being honored with the Basava Puraskar National Award for the years 2025-26. This award specifically recognizes individuals who diligently follow and propagate the ideals championed by Basavanna.

Basavanna's Historic Struggle Against Social Injustice

The Chief Minister elaborated on Basavanna's revolutionary role, stating that he was a formidable warrior who fought relentlessly against the oppressive caste and varna systems prevalent in society. "Basavanna raised his voice boldly against deep-rooted superstitions and outright rejected the deterministic doctrine of karma," Siddaramaiah said.

He provided historical context, explaining that for millennia, oppressed classes were systematically denied access to literacy and education. In response to the rigid hierarchies of the Vedic religion, Basava and his followers heralded the Lingayat religion as a progressive alternative. "Therefore, in the 12th century, the Lingayat religion, firmly based on the foundational pillars of equality and universal humanity, was established," the CM noted.

The Persistent Challenge of the Caste System

Siddaramaiah drew a parallel between Basavanna's efforts and those of other reformers like Buddha, highlighting their collective struggle for societal change amidst contradictions. "Yet, despite these historic efforts, the caste system persists with alarming tenacity today. The Indian caste system remains stagnant," he asserted.

He outlined a clear path forward, emphasizing that transformative change in this stagnant system is only possible when oppressed communities attain a triad of powers:

  1. Economic Power
  2. Social Power
  3. Educational Power

"Economic, social, and educational freedom is an absolute necessity for driving change in an inherently unequal society," Siddaramaiah stressed. He warned that those who remain unaware of the long history of injustices perpetrated against the weak in society are incapable of creating a new, equitable history.

Call for Education and Vigilance

The Chief Minister issued a stern warning about vested interests actively working to perpetuate societal inequality. To eradicate the caste system, he advocated for robust ideological and scientific education. "Therefore, the youth of today must guard themselves and not fall prey to regressive superstitions," he urged, accusing 'Manuvadis' of actively promoting such superstitions.

Government Support and Ministerial Tributes

Marking the government's commitment, Siddaramaiah announced a substantial grant of Rs 5 crore for the development of Basava Bhavan on this occasion.

Social Welfare Minister H C Mahadevappa described the celebrations as a significant step towards reconnecting people with the revolutionary ideals of the historic Kalyana movement. He highlighted Basavanna's early and progressive stand against gender discrimination and his strong emphasis on ethical governance and the responsible use of public funds. Minister Mahadevappa also praised the Anubhava Mantapa as a pioneering platform for inclusive dialogue and spirituality.

Kannada and Culture Minister Shivaraj Tangadagi hailed Basavanna as a timeless champion of equality and democratic values. He spoke about ongoing governmental efforts to formally recognize Basavanna as the state's 'Cultural Leader'.
