Surat: BJP Campaign in Gorat Locality Sparks Violent Clash with Residents
A political campaign in the Gorat locality of Rander, Surat, descended into chaos and violence on Thursday as local residents strongly objected to BJP functionaries entering the area to canvass for municipal election candidates. The incident highlights growing tensions in the community over political activities near a sensitive religious site.
Escalation from Protest to Physical Altercation
The BJP campaign team, which included prominent local figures such as MLA Purnesh Modi, former mayor Hemali Boghawala, and former councillor Anil Biscuitwala, faced immediate resistance upon arrival. Residents, visibly agitated, demanded the leaders leave the vicinity, leading to heated arguments that quickly escalated into a physical scuffle.
During the commotion, three women sustained minor injuries, and one woman fainted, reportedly due to the stress and chaos of the situation. All injured parties were promptly transported to New Civil Hospital for necessary medical treatment and evaluation.
Alleged Attack on Protester Triggers Wider Confrontation
According to eyewitness accounts from residents, the situation intensified dramatically after a female protester was allegedly assaulted by a member of the BJP campaign team. This alleged incident acted as a catalyst, drawing more locals to the spot who then confronted the BJP workers directly.
Amid the ensuing pandemonium, one of the municipal election candidates sought refuge inside a nearby house for safety. Police authorities were called to the scene to restore order and subsequently escorted the candidate out of the area without further incident.
Residents Cite Broken Promises and Temple Concerns
Local resident Ashit Gandhi provided context to the protest, stating that MLA Purnesh Modi had previously informed the community about a planned visit to the Gorat Hanuman Temple. "We permitted only a temple visit," Gandhi explained. "However, later in the evening, they initiated political campaigning. We protested against this, and during our demonstration, one of our women was attacked by a worker."
This sentiment is echoed by broader community concerns. Residents living around the Gorat Hanuman Temple had earlier displayed banners urging political leaders to seek votes only if they could guarantee the protection and sanctity of the shrine. Some long-time residents expressed feelings of insecurity, alleging that the temple is now encircled by residential buildings belonging to other communities, which has altered the area's demographic and social dynamics.
Broader Implications for Local Politics
The clash in Gorat underscores the volatile nature of election campaigning in densely populated urban areas, where religious and community sensitivities can quickly ignite conflicts. It also raises questions about campaign strategies and the adherence to prior agreements between political entities and local communities.
As Surat prepares for upcoming municipal elections, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for dialogue and respect for local sentiments to prevent such violent outbreaks in the future.
