BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday asserted that every goon associated with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) will be held accountable for their alleged atrocities if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) comes to power in West Bengal in the 2026 assembly elections. Addressing a press conference in Kolkata, Adhikari accused the TMC of fostering a culture of violence and intimidation across the state.
Strong Warning to TMC
Adhikari, who is the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, said, "Under a BJP government, no TMC goon will be spared. They will face the full force of the law for their crimes against the people of Bengal." He claimed that the TMC has been shielding criminals and using them to suppress political opponents.
Allegations of Atrocities
The BJP leader listed several incidents of alleged violence and harassment by TMC supporters, including attacks on women, opposition workers, and common citizens. He said that a BJP government would ensure justice for all victims and restore law and order in the state.
- Adhikari demanded a thorough investigation into all cases of political violence in the state.
- He urged the Election Commission to take strict action against TMC leaders involved in intimidatory tactics.
- The BJP leader also called for the deployment of central forces to ensure free and fair elections in 2026.
Political Reactions
The TMC dismissed Adhikari's statements as baseless and accused the BJP of spreading lies to gain political mileage. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, "The BJP is frustrated with its declining popularity and is resorting to false allegations. The people of Bengal trust the TMC and its leadership."
Adhikari, however, remained undeterred and reiterated his commitment to uprooting what he termed as the "TMC's reign of terror." He said, "The people of Bengal are suffering under the TMC's misrule. The BJP is their only hope for a better future."
With the 2026 assembly elections still two years away, political tensions in West Bengal continue to simmer. The BJP is hoping to build on its performance in the 2021 elections, where it won 77 seats, while the TMC secured a third consecutive term with 213 seats.
