Tamil Nadu 2026: DMK Allies Discuss TVK Alliance

Leaders of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Left parties met with DMK chief M.K. Stalin on Wednesday to discuss the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam's (TVK) request for an alliance in the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The meeting took place at Stalin's residence in Chennai and lasted for about an hour.

Allies to Decide Separately

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, VCK chief Thol. Thirumavalavan said that the three allies of the DMK would meet separately on Friday to decide on the TVK's request. The allies include the VCK, the Communist Party of India (CPI), and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M).

Thirumavalavan stated, "We have discussed the matter with the DMK president. The three allies will meet on Friday and take a collective decision on the TVK's proposal." He added that the decision would be based on the political situation and the need to defeat the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2026 elections.

TVK's Growing Influence

The TVK, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has been making inroads in Tamil Nadu politics and has expressed interest in joining the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance. The party has been seeking a seat-sharing arrangement for the upcoming assembly elections.

Political analysts see the TVK as a potential game-changer in Tamil Nadu politics, with its appeal among youth and urban voters. The DMK, which is currently in power, is looking to expand its alliance to counter the combined opposition of the AIADMK and the BJP.

DMK's Strategy

The DMK has been holding consultations with its allies to finalize the seat-sharing formula for the 2026 elections. The party is keen on accommodating the TVK while ensuring that its existing allies are not alienated. Stalin has emphasized the need for unity among secular forces to prevent the BJP from gaining a foothold in Tamil Nadu.

The final decision on the TVK's inclusion in the alliance is expected to be announced after the allies' meeting on Friday. The DMK is likely to make an official statement regarding the seat-sharing arrangement in the coming weeks.

The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in April-May 2026. The DMK-led alliance is seeking to retain power for a second consecutive term.
