Tiruchuli: DMK Stronghold as Thennarasu Seeks Fourth Term

Tiruchuli, located in the Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu, is widely regarded as the political home turf of senior Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader Thangam Thennarasu. The constituency has consistently demonstrated strong support for the DMK in the last three Assembly elections, with Thennarasu securing victory each time.

Electoral Performance of Thangam Thennarasu

In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Thangam Thennarasu of the DMK won with a total of 1,02,225 votes, defeating his closest rival, S. Rajasekar of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), by a significant margin of 60,992 votes. This victory underscored the DMK's stronghold in the constituency.

Earlier, in the 2016 Assembly elections, Thennarasu again emerged victorious, securing 89,927 votes against AIADMK candidate K. Dinesh Babu, who received 63,350 votes. The margin of victory stood at 26,577 votes, further consolidating the DMK's dominance.

In the 2011 Assembly elections, DMK's Thennarasu won with 81,613 votes, defeating AIADMK's Esakki Muthu, who garnered 61,661 votes. The margin of victory was 19,952 votes, marking the beginning of his consecutive wins.

Political Landscape of Tamil Nadu

The upcoming 234-seat Assembly election in Tamil Nadu will witness a multi-cornered contest. The ruling DMK, led by Chief Minister M K Stalin, will face opposition from the AIADMK and a resurgent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led alliance. Key campaign issues include welfare schemes, law and order, and the broader debate between Dravidian political identity and national integration narratives.

While the DMK government highlights its achievements in industrial growth and social justice, the opposition has targeted it over allegations of corruption and concerns about power shortages. Tiruchuli remains a crucial battleground, with Thennarasu seeking a fourth consecutive term.
