Trichy: A confrontation erupted between residents of Gandarvakottai and TVK MLA N Subramanian on Thursday when the legislator declined to assist in resolving a long-standing grievance regarding land deeds. The incident occurred during the MLA's visit to several localities, including Kaveri Nagar, where he was expressing gratitude to voters for their support in the recent elections.
Residents Present Petition
Upon his arrival, a group of residents, including members of the TVK party, submitted a petition to Subramanian. The petition requested the issuance of land deeds for the plots where they have been residing for years. The residents argued that they have been living on these sites for an extended period and deserve legal ownership rights.
MLA's Response Sparks Tension
According to sources, the MLA informed the petitioners that he could not intervene in the matter because, as per official records, the land had been handed over to a private mill under a contract. This explanation did not satisfy the residents, who countered that their residential area was not part of the mill contract. They insisted that the area was designated as a settlement zone and demanded the MLA's intervention.
The exchange grew heated as the residents pressed their case. Visibly frustrated, Subramanian reiterated that he could do nothing about the issue and advised them to approach him for help with other matters. This remark shocked both the public and party workers present, who expected the MLA to be more receptive to their concerns.
Video Goes Viral
A video of the incident has since gone viral on social media platforms, drawing widespread attention and criticism. Many users expressed disappointment over the MLA's dismissive attitude towards the residents' legitimate grievance. The incident has also raised questions about the responsiveness of elected representatives to public issues.
This confrontation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by residents in securing land rights in the region, with many calling for a more proactive approach from local authorities to resolve such disputes.
