In a significant political development in Tamil Nadu, TTV Dhinakaran, the leader of the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK), met the state Governor on Friday and asserted that Edappadi K. Palaniswami, the former Chief Minister, commands the support of 120 MLAs in the state assembly. Dhinakaran urged the Governor to invite Palaniswami to form the government, citing the majority mark of 117 in the 233-member house.
Political Turmoil in Tamil Nadu
The meeting comes amid intense political maneuvering in the state, following the resignation of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin after a no-confidence motion was passed against his government. The opposition parties, led by the AIADMK and its allies, have been pressing for a change in leadership. Dhinakaran's claim, if verified, could significantly alter the political landscape, as the AIADMK currently has 66 MLAs, while the AMMK has 18. The combined strength of the AIADMK-led alliance, including smaller parties, is believed to be around 100, but Dhinakaran's assertion of 120 suggests cross-voting or support from other quarters.
Dhinakaran's Statement
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Dhinakaran said, "I have submitted a memorandum to the Governor, signed by 120 MLAs, expressing their support for Edappadi K. Palaniswami as the next Chief Minister. The Governor should respect the mandate and invite Palaniswami to form the government immediately." He further added that the current situation demands a stable government, and Palaniswami's experience makes him the ideal candidate.
Governor's Response
The Governor has reportedly assured Dhinakaran that he will examine the memorandum and take a decision in accordance with the Constitution. Sources say the Governor may also seek a floor test to ascertain the majority, a standard procedure in such situations. Political analysts believe that the Governor's decision could set a precedent for future political crises in the state.
Reactions from Other Parties
The ruling DMK has dismissed Dhinakaran's claim as "fabricated" and accused him of trying to destabilize the democratically elected government. DMK spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan said, "This is a desperate attempt by a political opportunist. The DMK government enjoys the confidence of the people and will prove its majority on the floor of the House." Meanwhile, the AIADMK has welcomed Dhinakaran's move, with senior leader D. Jayakumar stating that the numbers are in their favor and they are ready to form a government.
Legal and Constitutional Implications
Constitutional experts point out that the Governor has the discretionary power to invite the leader who can command a majority. However, the Supreme Court has in the past emphasized that the Governor should not act arbitrarily and must follow established conventions. If the Governor decides to invite Palaniswami, the DMK may challenge the decision in court, leading to a prolonged legal battle.
The development has also sparked concerns about political instability in Tamil Nadu, which has witnessed frequent changes in government over the past decade. The state is currently facing several challenges, including a severe financial crisis and the aftermath of Cyclone Michaung. A stable government is crucial for addressing these issues, and the upcoming days will be critical in determining the political future of the state.
