NEW DELHI: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay is set to take oath as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu on May 7, following his party's victory in the state assembly elections with 108 seats, according to sources cited by ANI on Tuesday.
Swearing-In Ceremony Details
The swearing-in ceremony is likely to be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai. TVK emerged as the single-largest party in the Tamil Nadu polls but fell short of the majority mark by just 10 seats. The party is yet to decide which alliance partners it will bring on board to form the government.
How Will Vijay Form Government?
To secure a majority and form the government, TVK is likely to seek backing from smaller parties such as the Congress, PMK, Left parties, CPM, and VCK. Together, these parties could help TVK cross the majority mark. On the possibility of an alliance with TVK, AICC In-charge for Tamil Nadu, Girish Chodankar, stated that the party's leadership would take a call on the matter.
Chodankar said, "The people of Tamil Nadu voted for a change. Especially the youngsters and women have moved towards TVK, and that's why TVK is getting such large numbers. I have already submitted a report to our Congress President, Kharge ji, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul ji, and General Secretary of the Organisation Venugopal ji. All of them will take a call on what to do in Tamil Nadu."
Rahul Gandhi Congratulates Vijay
Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi congratulated Vijay after his party's massive victory on Monday. In a post on X, Gandhi said, "I spoke to Thiru Vijay and congratulated him on TVK's spectacular result. This mandate reflects the rising voice of youth which cannot, and will not, be ignored. My heartfelt thanks to the Congress workers of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry for their hard work and support. I reiterate that the Congress party will continue to protect and serve the people of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry."
Responding to Gandhi, Vijay said, "My sincere thanks to the Honorable Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha for the call and kind wishes! We shall remain committed to excellence in public service, and preserving the cultural ethos of our state which requires collective cooperation. Beyond politics, we shall prioritize the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu."
