TVK in Talks with AIADMK MLAs for Power-Sharing

NEW DELHI: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is reportedly in discussions with a faction of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) legislators regarding a potential power-sharing agreement, as the political maneuvering over government formation in Tamil Nadu escalated on Thursday. This development follows the relocation of 28 AIADMK MLAs to a private resort in Puducherry.

AIADMK MLAs Shifted to Resort

The legislators staying at the resort in Poorankuppam are supporters of senior AIADMK leader CV Shanmugam. Their move has sparked speculation that certain groups within the AIADMK may be considering backing TVK chief Vijay in the ongoing government formation process, according to sources cited by ANI.

Possible Power-Sharing Formula

Sources indicated that a potential power-sharing arrangement is being discussed, under which CV Shanmugam could be offered the position of Deputy Chief Minister, along with key ministerial portfolios. Former Tamil Nadu minister and TVK candidate KA Sengottaiyan is reportedly involved in these talks.

Division Within AIADMK Leadership

However, the AIADMK leadership appears divided on the issue. Party general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami has not agreed to the proposal of supporting TVK, leading to internal differences. Meanwhile, leaders such as CV Shanmugam and OS Manian are believed to favor supporting TVK in exchange for major positions in a potential coalition government.

Legal Options and Fresh Elections

Sources also revealed that some senior leaders have advised TVK to explore legal avenues, including approaching the Supreme Court or the high court regarding the government formation process. Others have suggested the possibility of fresh elections if the deadlock persists.

TVK's Position in Assembly

Despite emerging as a major force in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, TVK remains five MLAs short of the majority mark. Vijay has already secured the backing of five MLAs from Congress, but still requires support from five more legislators to cross the halfway mark in the Tamil Nadu assembly.
