In a concerning incident ahead of the Tamil Nadu State Assembly election results, a party office of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) near Srirangam in Trichy district was allegedly torched by unidentified miscreants on Friday. Police have initiated an investigation into the matter, which has raised tensions in the region.
Details of the Incident
The thatched shed, measuring approximately 400 square feet, was located in Kamanayakkanpalayam village near Pettaivaithalai in Trichy district. It was functioning as the election campaign office for the actor Vijay-led TVK, specifically for the Srirangam Assembly constituency. The fire broke out around 2:30 am on Friday, and police suspect it was a case of arson. Alerted villagers noticed the flames and rushed to the spot to douse the fire. However, by the time they managed to bring it under control, the shed had already been completely gutted.
Vandalism and Damage
In addition to the fire, a large digital banner promoting TVK’s Srirangam Assembly candidate S. Ramesh, which had been erected near the office, was found torn and heavily damaged. The alleged arson and vandalism occurred just four days before the declaration of results for the Tamil Nadu State Assembly elections, adding to the political tension in the area.
Police Action and Complaint
A complaint was registered at the Pettaivaithalai Police Station by Veera Siva, the Trichy district secretary of TVK’s farmers’ wing. Police have begun investigating the case and are actively searching for the suspects. Authorities are examining evidence and gathering witness statements to identify those responsible.
Candidate’s Demands
TVK candidate S. Ramesh has demanded that the police immediately arrest the culprits involved in the arson and vandalism. Furthermore, Ramesh claimed to have received information suggesting that opposition parties are planning violent acts against him and his party workers at the vote counting centre on counting day. He has urged the authorities to provide additional security at the counting centre and ensure that the entire vote counting process is conducted fairly and with complete integrity.
