Trichy, which had previously patronized the DMK and AIADMK equally in assembly elections, has decisively voted for the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) this time. The new party's candidates won six out of nine assembly segments in the district, marking a significant political shift.
Key Upsets and Victories
The biggest upset occurred in Thiruverumbur, where Navalpattu Viji of TVK defeated the school education minister and sitting MLA Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi. Another minister, K N Nehru, barely scraped through in Trichy West, trailing behind the TVK candidate in the first 10 rounds of counting before ultimately winning by 4,786 votes.
DMK's Losses
In 2021, Trichy elected DMK candidates in all nine assembly segments. However, the party dropped four of its incumbent MLAs: M Palaniyandi in Srirangam, Kaduvetti Thiyagarajan in Musiri, A Soundara Pandian in Lalgudi, and Stalin Kumar in Thuraiyur (SC). The reserved seat was ceded to Congress as part of the DMK alliance. DMK lost all four segments to TVK in Musiri, Thuraiyur, and Srirangam, and to AIADMK's Leema Rose Martin in Lalgudi.
TVK's M Vignesh won Musiri by a margin of 17,442 votes, Ramesh won Srirangam by 33,590 votes, and M Ravisankar won Thuraiyur by 9,614 votes.
DMK's Sole Victory
DMK's incumbent MLA from Manachanallur, S Kathiravan, was reelected after defeating V Saravanan of TVK by 12,364 votes.
Other Results
In Manapparai, TVK's R Kathiravan won by a margin of 1,426 votes, with AIADMK's Dr P L Vijayakumar finishing second. TVK chief Vijay bagged Trichy East by 27,416 votes, defeating DMK's Inigo Irudayaraj. The candidature of the TVK leader in Trichy had a significant impact in adjoining Thiruverumbur and Srirangam segments, and to an extent in Trichy West.
Pudukottai District
In Pudukottai district, DMK won three of six assembly segments. TVK secured two and AIADMK one. As part of the seat-sharing arrangement, the BJP was allotted three seats but failed to make any inroads.
