The Uttar Pradesh government has taken decisive administrative action by removing Deoria Superintendent of Police (SP) Sanjeev Suman from his post. This move comes in the wake of a significant controversy surrounding a dispute related to road construction on a drainage channel, locally known as a chak nali, in Lakshmipur village within the Deoria district.
Escalation of Tensions and Tragic Incident
The dispute initially arose during construction work on the drainage infrastructure, which quickly escalated tensions among villagers in Lakshmipur. Amid the heightened conflict, a lawyer reportedly suffered a fatal heart attack, further complicating the situation. In response to this tragic event, authorities registered a First Information Report (FIR) under murder charges against the village pradhan and his associates, indicating the severity of the incident.
Administrative Response and Personnel Changes
Official sources stated that the action against SP Sanjeev Suman was taken due to alleged lapses in prompt and effective handling of the matter. This removal follows the earlier suspension of Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Vipin Dwivedi in connection with the same incident, highlighting serious administrative concern over how the case was managed.
In a swift administrative reshuffle, SP Ambedkarnagar Abhijit Shankar has been appointed as the new SP of Deoria. Concurrently, Prachi Singh, who serves as the Commandant of the 32nd Battalion of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), has been posted as the SP of Ambedkarnagar, ensuring continuity in law enforcement leadership.
Background of the Removed Officer
Sanjeev Suman, known for his tough policing style, had a notable career trajectory prior to this incident. He previously served as the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Aligarh after his transfer in September 2025, before being posted to Deoria. His earlier assignments included serving as Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) East in Lucknow, where he was part of the police team involved in the encounter of hardened criminal Girdhari Singh, showcasing his experience in high-stakes law enforcement situations.
Following his removal, Suman has been attached to the Director General of Police (DGP) headquarters in Lucknow, pending further orders. This administrative action underscores the Uttar Pradesh government's commitment to accountability and effective governance in handling sensitive local disputes.
