Uttar Pradesh Finance Minister Suresh Khanna presented a substantial budget of ₹9.13 lakh crore for the financial year 2026-27 in the state Assembly on Wednesday. This marks a significant increase of approximately 12.2 percent compared to the previous year's outlay, reflecting the state's commitment to expansive fiscal planning and economic growth.
Fiscal Discipline and Debt Control Emphasized
While tabling the budget before the House, Khanna underscored the state government's unwavering dedication to robust fiscal management and stringent debt control measures. In line with the recommendations of the 16th Central Finance Commission, which have been accepted by the Centre, the fiscal deficit limit for 2026-27 has been firmly set at three percent. This limit is projected to remain effective until the financial year 2030-31, ensuring long-term financial stability.
Key Sector Allocations Highlighted
Detailing the allocations for major sectors, Khanna announced that education will receive 12.4 percent of the total budget, while health is allocated six percent. Additionally, agriculture and allied services have been earmarked nine percent of the budget, demonstrating a balanced approach to addressing critical areas of development.
Focus on Infrastructure and Employment Generation
The minister emphasized that capital investment and infrastructure development are pivotal in strengthening the state's economy. He highlighted the importance of providing ample employment opportunities to Uttar Pradesh's youth and equipping them with essential skills. Khanna noted that individuals with technical skills or trade proficiency are less likely to face unemployment, underscoring the need for targeted initiatives.
Large-Scale Skill Development Initiatives
To address this, the budget outlines plans for large-scale, employment-oriented training and skill enhancement programs to be run in mission mode on a priority basis. Alongside formal education, arrangements will be made to bolster the skill base of the youth across the state.
- The capacity of existing skill development training centres will be significantly enhanced.
- New centres will be established throughout Uttar Pradesh to expand access.
- Private sector participation will be actively encouraged in this campaign.
- Skill development and job placement centres will be set up in various districts under the public-private partnership (PPP) model.
- Separate centres will be created specifically for women to boost their participation in the workforce.
This comprehensive budget aims to foster economic resilience, promote inclusive growth, and prepare the state's population for future challenges through strategic investments in key sectors and human capital development.
