Uttarakhand's Economy Expands 1.5 Times in Four Years, GSDP Surges to Rs 3.81 Lakh Crore
Dehradun: Uttarakhand has witnessed a remarkable economic transformation over the past four years, with its gross state domestic product (GSDP) soaring from Rs 2.54 lakh crore in 2022 to over Rs 3.81 lakh crore in 2024-25, according to the state government's economic survey released on Thursday. This represents a growth of approximately 50%, underscoring a period of robust development and strategic governance.
Key Economic Indicators Show Significant Improvement
The survey, prepared in collaboration with the National Council of Applied Economic Research, highlights a growth rate of 7.23% for the state in 2024-25. Principal Secretary R Meenakshi Sundaram shared that per capita income has also seen a substantial rise, increasing from Rs 1.94 lakh in 2022 to Rs 2.73 lakh in 2024-25, reflecting enhanced individual prosperity.
Poverty and Employment Metrics Demonstrate Positive Trends
Multidimensional poverty, which assesses deprivation beyond income, declined from 9.7% in 2021-22 to 6.92% in 2024-25. Concurrently, the labour force participation rate surged from 60.1% to 64.4%, indicating a 4.3% rise in employment opportunities and a more engaged workforce.
Industrial and Startup Sectors Experience Rapid Growth
Industrial activity in Uttarakhand has expanded significantly. The number of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) increased from 59,798 in 2021-22 to 79,394 in 2024-25, with employment in this sector rising from 3.43 lakh in 2022 to 4.56 lakh in 2025. Large industries also grew from 107 to 128 during the same period.
Startup activity has seen an explosive rise. From no registered startups until 2017, the state now boasts 1,750 startups in 2024-25, up from 702 in 2021-22, showcasing a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Infrastructure and Social Sectors Show Notable Progress
Infrastructure development has been a key focus. The total road length increased from 50,393 km in 2021-22 to 51,278 km in 2024-25. Heliports rose from two in 2022 to seven in 2025, and helipads expanded from 60 to 118, enhancing connectivity.
In education, the dropout ratio in primary schools declined from 1.64% to 1.41%, while in secondary schools, it fell sharply from 7.65% to 4.59%. The number of degree colleges increased from 124 to 139, and engineering colleges surged from 20 to 52.
Power generation witnessed a dramatic rise from 5,157 million units in 2021-22 to 16,500 million units in 2024-25, with electricity consumption growing from 12,518 million units to 17,192 million units.
Health Indicators Reflect Improved Well-being
Health outcomes have improved, with the infant mortality rate dropping from 22 to 20 and the maternal mortality rate decreasing from 103 to 91. Life expectancy in the state increased from 71.7 years to 73 years, indicating better healthcare access and quality.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami commented, "The figures reflect our government's focus on sustainable development and good governance. Progress in GSDP, per capita income, MSMEs, startups, and tourism shows Uttarakhand is rapidly advancing on the path of development."
