Vijayawada Grapples with Severe CNG Shortage Amidst Iran-Israel Conflict
The city of Vijayawada is currently confronting a critical shortage of LPG and CNG, a situation directly linked to the ongoing war between Iran and Israel, with involvement from the USA. This fuel crisis has resulted in three-wheeler CNG autos enduring extensive waiting periods at filling stations, with refueling times now exceeding an hour, significantly disrupting daily operations.
Impact on Auto Drivers and Daily Commutes
Approximately 15,000 autos rely on CNG for their daily functions in Vijayawada. This includes 8,000 autos operating within the city limits and an additional 7,000 from neighboring suburbs. The state government had previously implemented measures to reduce vehicular pollution by restricting diesel vehicles and permitting only CNG autos to operate in urban areas. As part of this initiative, 8,000 autos were officially sanctioned for Vijayawada, with another 4,000 from suburbs such as Ibrahimpatnam and Gannavaram allowed to ply within the city.
Rama Krishna, an auto driver from Ajith Singh Nagar, highlighted the financial strain caused by the shortage. "Staff at gas filling stations are charging an extra Rs 4 per kilogram from drivers. While the official cost is Rs 91 per kilogram of CNG, we are being forced to pay Rs 95," he explained. Previously, refilling gas took about 10 minutes, but since the war crisis escalated, it now takes around 45 minutes at stations across Vijayawada.
Long Queues and Reduced Earnings
Ravi, another auto driver from the Krishnalanka area, shared his experiences of the prolonged delays. He typically refuels at the station in front of Rajiv Gandhi Park but noted that for the past five days, autos have been lining up as far as the Pandit Nehru Bus Station, nearly half a kilometer away. "It takes us nearly an hour to refill gas, which is cutting into our daily earnings. We are also reducing the number of trips due to the limited CNG availability," Ravi stated.
The extended waiting times, often exceeding an hour, have prompted many drivers to consider switching back to diesel vehicles, undermining the government's pollution control efforts. Vijayawada city is serviced by around five CNG filling stations located at key points including Rajiv Gandhi Park, Jakkampudi YSR Colony, Bhavanipuram, Gandhinagar, and Autonagar, all of which are experiencing similar issues.
