The National Football League lost one of its most electrifying defensive players on Saturday night. The San Francisco 49ers confirmed the death of former outside linebacker Aldon Smith, who was just 36 years old. No cause of death has been released. Smith burst onto the scene in 2011 as one of the most feared pass rushers in the league, racking up 52.5 career sacks across stints with the 49ers, Raiders, and Cowboys. His career, however, never reached the heights many expected.
What Was Aldon Smith's Cause of Death?
The 49ers broke the news on June 13, 2026, in an official statement that offered grief but no answers. "We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith," the franchise said. "Aldon's undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization, having recorded one of the best rookie seasons the National Football League has seen. Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into. Our entire organization sends its deepest condolences to the Smith family and all who knew and loved Aldon." At the time of writing, neither Smith's family, representatives, nor the 49ers have disclosed a cause. He was born on September 25, 1989. The word "sudden" in the team's statement stood out. No illness had been publicly known, and nothing in Smith's recent public life signalled this was coming. The NFL world is processing a loss that nobody saw arriving.
How Did Aldon Smith's NFL Career Unravel After Such a Promising Start?
Smith came into the league as the 7th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, and he immediately looked like a generational talent. As a rookie, he posted 14 sacks, finishing second in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting behind Von Miller. A year later, he was even better. His 2012 season, in which he recorded 19.5 sacks, earned him Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro honours. At 22, he was being talked about as a cornerstone of the San Francisco defence for the next decade.
Then things fell apart. In September 2013, Smith was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. He entered a treatment facility and missed five games. The 2014 season brought a nine-game suspension from the NFL for violating substance abuse and personal conduct policies. More legal issues followed, and San Francisco released him in 2015.
He signed with the Oakland Raiders and managed nine appearances before another suspension effectively froze his career for several seasons. Smith returned one final time with the Dallas Cowboys in 2020, but that chapter closed quickly. His story is a painful reminder of how quickly professional football can slip away when off-field problems consume what happens on it.
