Andhra Pradesh recorded 19,557 road accidents in 2024, marking a marginal decline of 2% compared to 19,949 accidents in 2023, according to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways' Road Accidents in India 2024 report. The state ranked ninth nationally in total road accidents. While the overall number of crashes decreased slightly, Andhra Pradesh remained among the top ten states with the highest accident counts.
Vijayawada Accident Reduction
Vijayawada experienced a notable reduction in road accidents, with crashes falling from 1,522 in 2023 to 1,343 in 2024—a decline of 179 accidents or 11.8%. This placed the city among the top urban centers in India with the highest reduction in accidents among 50 million-plus cities. However, the number of road accident deaths in Vijayawada increased from 373 in 2023 to 430 in 2024, while injuries declined from 1,416 to 1,156. Vijayawada ranked 24th among million-plus cities in accident numbers and fatalities.
Visakhapatnam Trends
Visakhapatnam reported 1,283 road accidents in 2024, slightly lower than 1,293 in 2023. However, accident-related deaths rose from 322 to 346, while the number of injured persons decreased marginally to 1,158.
National Highways and Speeding
A significant share of accidents in Andhra Pradesh occurred on National Highways. The state recorded 8,258 accidents on NHs in 2024, accounting for 5.5% of all NH accidents nationwide, ranking eighth nationally. The report highlighted speeding as the leading cause of road deaths, responsible for over 70% of fatalities across India. Additionally, individuals aged 18-60 constituted more than 83% of all road accident victims.
Overall, the data underscores the persistent challenge of road safety in Andhra Pradesh, with speeding and vulnerable age groups driving fatalities despite a slight decline in accident numbers.
