Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday called upon athletes to lead the anti-drug movement in the Union Territory, asserting that they can play a pivotal role in steering the youth away from substance abuse. Addressing a gathering at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar, Sinha highlighted the need for a collective effort to combat the drug menace.
Role Models for Society
Sinha emphasized that athletes, given their discipline and dedication, serve as ideal role models for the younger generation. He urged them to take the initiative in spreading awareness about the dangers of drug addiction. "You have the power to inspire change. Your commitment to fitness and sports can motivate others to adopt a healthy lifestyle," he said.
Government Support and Initiatives
The Lieutenant Governor also outlined various government measures to tackle drug abuse, including strict enforcement of laws and rehabilitation programs. He assured full support to athletes and organizations working towards a drug-free society. "The administration is committed to providing resources and platforms for athletes to lead this crusade," Sinha added.
Several prominent athletes from the region attended the event, pledging their support to the cause. They expressed willingness to participate in awareness campaigns and community outreach programs. The event was part of a broader initiative by the J&K administration to involve all sections of society in the fight against drugs.
Community Engagement
Sinha called for a multi-pronged approach involving parents, teachers, and local leaders to create a robust support system. He stressed that prevention is key and that early intervention can save many lives. The government is also working on enhancing sports infrastructure to provide constructive outlets for youth energy.
The anti-drug movement in J&K has gained momentum in recent months, with several crackdowns on drug peddlers and awareness drives in educational institutions. The LG's appeal to athletes is seen as a strategic move to leverage their influence for social change.
