Jemma Stapleton, aged 25, passed away while on an overseas family holiday, sending shockwaves through the country's athletics community. Who Was Jemma Stapleton?
Jemma began competing as a young child in hurdles and sprint events, quickly establishing herself as a standout performer through Little Athletics. She grew up competing with the Rowville Club under Knox Little Athletics. From an early age, she showed great talent, determination, and a genuine love for athletics, achieving success at the Knox Championship level and later representing Knox at the state level.
Stawell Gift Finalist
Her senior career saw her rise steadily through the Victorian Athletic League circuit, and she became one to watch on the professional running scene. She placed third in last year's Stawell Gift final, Australia's richest short-distance sprint competition. She had beaten 2022 winner and Australian representative Carla Bull as a frontrunner in the semi-finals, with commentator Tamsyn Manou praising her performance on the day. Stapleton also won the 2026 Women's Ringwood Gift, solidifying her status among Victoria's elite sprinters. After her third-place result in the 2025 final, she returned to Stawell in 2026 and made it to another semi-final, a testament to the continued growth of a career cut tragically short.

The most heartbreaking words came from those closest to her. Her partner Tyler wrote: "I can't put into words the hurt I am feeling. You are the single greatest thing to happen to me and I am so grateful for the love we shared. I love you with all my heart and I will never stop." Her brother Joel wrote: "Rest in peace, I love you so much. I promise I'll make you proud. You were the best sister and my best friend. I'll forever miss you. Rest easy."
Athletics coach Scott Rowsell, who knew her from the track, described Stapleton as "a beautiful, bright and warm personality who was always smiling," saying her presence lifted every environment she stepped into. That description kept coming up, in different words, from nearly everyone who spoke about her publicly.
The Victorian Athletic League described her as a rising star "whose presence, character and contribution left a lasting impact on those around her." The Rowville Netball Club, where she was also a member, said that "the loss of someone so young is simply unimaginable" and that "there are no words that can truly ease the pain being felt by those who loved her."
