Basavareddy stuns Fritz in French Open first round

In a stunning upset at the 2026 French Open, 21-year-old American Nishesh Basavareddy defeated fellow countryman and World No. 9 Taylor Fritz on Sunday. Making his Roland Garros debut, the 148th-ranked Basavareddy recorded his first career top-10 win with a four-set thriller of 7-6(5), 7-6(5), 6-7(9), 6-1 on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.

This victory marks a historic moment as Basavareddy became the first American to beat a top-10 player at the clay-court Grand Slam since Jan-Michael Gambill in the year 2000. Fritz, who arrived in Paris with minimal match practice after a two-month absence due to a knee injury, struggled to find his rhythm and succumbed to his younger opponent after nearly three hours of play.

The win is a milestone for the Indian-origin talent, who earned his wildcard spot in Paris by winning the USTA's Roland Garros wild card challenge. Basavareddy will continue his campaign with a potential meeting against another young American, Alex Michelsen, who faces Aleksandr Shevchenko in the first round.
