Chhattisgarh to Host Inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games from March 25
Chhattisgarh is poised to make history by hosting the first-ever Khelo India Tribal Games from March 25 to April 3, 2025. The multi-city event will unfold across Raipur, Jagdalpur, and Ambikapur, drawing an impressive contingent of approximately 3,700 participants, including athletes, coaches, and officials from various parts of India. This landmark initiative under the Khelo India program marks a significant milestone for the state, showcasing its burgeoning sporting landscape, particularly in tribal-dominated regions such as Bastar and Surguja.
A Proud Moment for Chhattisgarh and Tribal Talent
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed immense pride in Chhattisgarh's selection as the host, emphasizing the government's unwavering commitment to youth development through education, skill enhancement, employment opportunities, and sports. "This event will not only showcase the incredible talent of our tribal athletes but also launch them onto the national stage," he stated, highlighting the transformative potential of the games. Officials attribute the state's hosting role to the overwhelming success of recent grassroots sporting events, notably the Bastar Olympics and Surguja Olympics, which have seen exponential growth in participation.
Grassroots Enthusiasm and Athletic Excellence
The surge in grassroots sports is evident from registration numbers: the Bastar Olympics witnessed a remarkable increase from 1.65 lakh participants in 2024 to 3.91 lakh in 2025, while the Surguja Olympics attracted over 3.49 lakh participants. This deep-seated enthusiasm underscores the vibrant sporting culture in tribal areas. Senior football coach Sarita Kujur Toppo, with 24 years of coaching experience, praised tribal athletes for their exceptional discipline, sincerity, and physical endurance, rooted in cultural values and lifestyle. "Tribal players are extremely disciplined. Their physical recovery and endurance are often better than those of players from urban areas," she noted, attributing their natural stamina to traditional dietary habits rich in millets, drumsticks, and green leafy vegetables—foods now celebrated as superfoods.
Prominent Participants and Event Details
The games will feature a roster of accomplished tribal athletes who have excelled at national and international levels. Among them is Kiran Bista, 23, a footballer who represented India in the Asian Football Championship in 2025. She will be joined by promising young players from Kondagaon, including Rashi Poyam, Madwai Pooja, and Shraddha Pradhani, all aged 16, who aspire to pursue sports professionally. Competitions will span seven disciplines, accompanied by two demonstration events, offering a comprehensive platform for showcasing tribal athletic prowess and fostering future champions.
