Cowboys Reconsider Maxx Crosby Trade to Address Critical Pass Rush Issues
The Dallas Cowboys continue to face significant challenges in establishing a reliable edge presence on their defense, leading to renewed discussions about acquiring star pass rusher Maxx Crosby from the Las Vegas Raiders. This potential move has quietly regained momentum as the team evaluates its options ahead of the upcoming NFL draft.
Failed Offseason Attempt and Revised Framework
Earlier this offseason, the Cowboys aggressively pursued a trade for Crosby, only to see a separate deal between the Raiders and Baltimore Ravens collapse due to a failed physical examination. Dallas quickly shifted its focus to other targets, but with the draft approaching and clear roster gaps remaining, the possibility of another attempt is now being seriously considered.
According to FOX Sports analyst Ralph Vacchiano, the Cowboys are exploring a revised trade package that would center around their No. 12 overall pick, No. 92 selection, and a future third-round draft choice. This represents a significant adjustment from their initial offer, which reportedly included a first and second-round pick.
"This is probably a very un-Jerry Jones-like move, but the Cowboys' defense is a mess, and they desperately need help with their pass rush," Vacchiano wrote. "It would be costly, though not as costly as the two first-round picks the Ravens initially agreed to send to Vegas for Crosby before that trade fell apart."
Defensive Transformation and Current Needs
The Cowboys' defensive identity underwent a major transformation following the trade of star linebacker Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers. In return, Dallas secured multiple first-round draft picks and acquired defensive tackle Kenny Clark, later using additional draft capital to bring in Quinnen Williams.
While these moves significantly strengthened the interior defensive line, they left the edge rushing position noticeably thin. Crosby represents an immediate solution to this problem, having recorded 10 sacks in 15 games last season despite dealing with knee issues. His playing style emphasizes relentless effort, precise timing, and fundamental technique rather than flashy athleticism.
Vacchiano further explained the Cowboys' potential strategy: "The Cowboys have two first-rounders, so they could part with one and sweeten the deal with a couple of thirds. Assuming Crosby's knee isn't ravaged, it's worth the risk for a team desperate to make a Super Bowl run, because adding Crosby would give the Cowboys one of the best defensive fronts in the league."
Health Considerations and Strategic Implications
The primary variable in any potential trade remains Crosby's health, specifically the same knee issue that derailed the Ravens deal. This medical concern could potentially lower his trade value, transforming what might otherwise be considered a risky move into a calculated gamble for the Cowboys.
For the Raiders, trading Crosby could make strategic sense if they continue their rebuilding process, as it would free up significant salary cap space while bringing in younger assets through draft picks.
