Ethiopian long-distance runner Yebrgual Melese has passed away at the age of 36 after suffering a sudden medical emergency while training in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Melese had been preparing for the Ottawa Marathon scheduled for May 24 and was expected to be one of the strongest contenders in the women's race. According to local reports, she fell seriously ill during training earlier this week and was rushed to the hospital on Tuesday. Despite medical efforts, doctors were unable to save her.
Ethiopian Athletics Federation Confirms Death
The Ethiopian Athletics Federation confirmed her death in an emotional statement, calling Melese a “heroic athlete” and offering condolences to her family, friends, and supporters. Her death has sent shockwaves through the athletics world, particularly because she was still competing at a high level and had continued training for major international races. Just days before she was scheduled to travel to Canada for the Ottawa race, many had expected her to challenge for victory.
A Stellar Marathon Career
Melese built a strong reputation in marathon running over the years. She won major races in Houston, Shanghai, and Prague, and also stood on the podium in some of the world's biggest marathon events. One of the highlights of her career came in 2018 at the Dubai Marathon, where she finished with a personal best time of 2:19:33. That performance placed her among the fastest women marathon runners in history at the time. Interestingly, even such a quick time did not secure victory in Dubai, as four women crossed the finish line under 2 hours and 20 minutes that day. Nevertheless, Melese's performance remained one of the strongest runs of her career and helped her gain worldwide recognition.
Boston Marathon Silver Medal
Back in 2015, she finished second at the Boston Marathon, one of the most prestigious and challenging marathon races in the world. Over the years, she became known for her calm demeanor, strong finishing ability, and experience in major international competitions. Her consistency and speed in long-distance racing earned her widespread respect.
Legacy and Mourning
Her death has left runners and athletics fans in mourning across Ethiopia and beyond. Many athletes and supporters have shared messages online, remembering her achievements and contributions to marathon running. At just 36 years old, Melese was still active in the sport and looked forward to more races this season. Her sudden passing is a profound loss to the athletics community.
