Gorakhpur to Establish SAI Centre of Excellence for Rowing
Gorakhpur is poised to become a major hub for rowing with the establishment of a Centre of Excellence of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) near Ramgarh Tal, following directives from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The proposed facility, to be developed at the world-class Water Sports Complex, is designed to offer international-standard training to rowing athletes, elevating the sport's profile in the region.
Momentum from Successful Events
The initiative gained significant traction after Ramgarh Tal emerged as a preferred venue for national rowing events over the past three years. Major competitions such as the Khelo India University Games, sub-junior nationals, the Asmita National Women’s Rowing League, and the 46th Junior National Rowing Championship have been successfully hosted at this location. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath attended two of these events, reinforcing the commitment to develop Gorakhpur as a premier water sports destination.
Recognition from Rowing Federation
Officials from the Rowing Federation of India have designated Gorakhpur as the 'first choice' for a National Centre of Excellence in rowing. Federation President M Balaji Maradappa noted that the transformation of Ramgarh Tal and the creation of the Water Sports Complex have significantly enhanced prospects for the sport in Uttar Pradesh. Following discussions with CM Yogi during the recent Junior National Rowing Championship, senior officials from the state sports department and the Gorakhpur Development Authority conducted an inspection of the complex to assess infrastructure requirements.
Infrastructure Development Plans
Gorakhpur Development Authority Vice-Chairman Abhinav Gopal confirmed that all necessary facilities, including a gymnasium, dormitories, a cafeteria, and medical rooms, will be developed at the complex in accordance with SAI norms. This comprehensive approach ensures that athletes have access to top-tier amenities for training and recovery, positioning Gorakhpur as a leading center for rowing excellence in India.
