Carolina Hurricanes Win Stanley Cup After 20-Year Drought
Hurricanes Capture Stanley Cup, End 20-Year Drought

The Carolina Hurricanes have captured their second Stanley Cup title, ending a 20-year championship drought, by defeating the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 in Game 6 of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final on Sunday night at T-Mobile Arena. The Hurricanes won the series 4-2, completing a dominant 16-3 postseason run. Between 2019 and 2025, Carolina reached the finals three times and advanced to the Eastern Conference final.

Strong Defense Leads to Victory

The Hurricanes' formidable defense was key to their success. Carolina held Vegas to just five total goals across Games 4 and 5, then completed a shutout in Game 6. Goalie Brandon Bussi, making only his 43rd NHL appearance, finished the Final with 81 saves on 87 shots despite a two-month gap between starts.

Jackson Blake contributed a goal and an assist, while Taylor Hall scored just 3:47 into the game to set the tone. Nikolaj Ehlers added an empty-net goal to seal the win.

Coaching and Leadership

Rod Brind'Amour, who captained the Hurricanes to their 2006 victory, guided the team as head coach. He emphasized the importance of sticking to their game plan. "I know what works," Brind'Amour said. "I know we didn't win, and we haven't won yet, and all that. I get it. But I know what doesn't work. If we play a different way, we're not going to be even knocking on the door." He added, "We knew what we had here. I did, for sure, and the guys believed in it."

Vegas Golden Knights' Struggles

The Golden Knights struggled offensively in Game 6, going 18:37 between shots on goal in the second and third periods. Despite reaching their third Cup final, this was the first time they were shut out. Captain Mark Stone expressed disappointment, saying, "I am very proud to be a part of this organization, very proud to lead this team, very proud to play with every single guy that steps into our locker room. This feeling sucks. I never want to have it again."

Celebration in Carolina

Fans at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh and throughout downtown Carolina rejoiced at the victory, celebrating what Brind'Amour called "the realest, fullest sense" of being a champion. The Hurricanes' win marks their first Stanley Cup since 2006, ending a long-awaited drought for the franchise.
