IIS Opens Guwahati Hub to Train Northeast Athletes and Coaches

Inspire Institute of Sport Expands Reach with New Guwahati Training Hub

The Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS), a premier training facility for aspiring athletes, is taking a significant step to overcome accessibility barriers in India's northeastern region. By establishing a new training hub in Guwahati this year, the institute aims to bring world-class coaching and resources closer to home for talented sportspersons from this area.

Addressing Regional Challenges Through Strategic Expansion

For years, athletes from the northeast have traveled to IIS's main center in Vijayanagar, Karnataka, seeking advanced training to compete at international levels. However, logistical difficulties and distance have posed persistent hurdles. In response, IIS is not only opening the Guwahati hub but also maintains three regional judo centers in Manipur, which currently train 455 judokas, with an additional 40 athletes at the Karnataka facility.

"We are in the process of setting up a hub in Guwahati which will be very close to everybody and running a lot of camps and training out of there," explained Manisha Malhotra, president of IIS. "I do believe that that can give you a lot of results in the next couple of years."

Focus on Coach Development and Key Sports

The Guwahati hub will serve both residential and non-residential athletes, but its primary mission is to cultivate local coaching talent. This initiative targets five specific sports: athletics, taekwondo, swimming, boxing, and archery. By empowering coaches from the region, IIS hopes to create a sustainable ecosystem that nurtures future champions.

"The big focus there is to train the trainers and get the coaches going and then the coaches can go back and do it," added Malhotra, a former national tennis player. This approach leverages local expertise to foster long-term athletic development across communities.

Celebrating Successes Amidst Adversity

IIS has already seen remarkable achievements from northeast athletes, such as Manipuri judoka Linthoi Chanambam and Assam swimmer Tirthank Pegu, who won a silver medal in the boys' 200m butterfly at the Asian Youth Games. Despite these triumphs, the institute has faced challenges due to regional conflicts, which have emotionally impacted young athletes separated from their families.

"It was a very difficult period emotionally for the kids. They didn't know what's happening back home because they couldn't get hold of phones and then there were curfews," Malhotra recounted. To support them, IIS provided logistical assistance, counseling, and activities to maintain morale and safety.

A Tribute to Northeast Women Athletes

Malhotra expressed admiration for the resilience and physical strength of women athletes from the northeast, noting, "The women from the northeast are so much stronger physically than the rest of the country." This recognition underscores the potential for future successes as IIS expands its footprint.

With the new Guwahati hub, IIS is poised to transform the training landscape for northeast athletes, offering hope and opportunity to those striving to make India proud on global stages.
