India to Host Archery Asia Cup in 2027 After 22-Year Gap

India Secures Hosting Rights for Prestigious Archery Asia Cup in 2027

In a significant boost for Indian sports, the country is set to host a major international archery event after a gap of more than two decades. Delhi has been awarded the second leg of the Asia Cup in 2027, marking the first time since 2005 that India will stage a top-tier global archery tournament. This decision was approved by World Archery Asia during a recent meeting in Kolkata, involving its president and officials from the Archery Association of India.

Confidence in India's Hosting Capabilities

World Archery Asia president Kazi Rajib Uddin Ahmed Chapol confirmed the development after discussions with Archery Association of India secretary general Virendra Sachdeva. He expressed strong confidence in India's ability to successfully organize the event, stating that the governing body is positive about Delhi as the host city. Chapol emphasized that there should be no issues, and if the Archery Association of India proceeds, they will host it. Additionally, he revealed that Delhi is under consideration as the venue for the Commonwealth Archery Championships next year, further highlighting India's growing role in the archery community.

Historic Return to the Global Archery Stage

India last hosted a major international archery competition in 2005, when the Asian Archery Championships were held in Delhi. The upcoming Asia Cup leg in 2027 will therefore represent a historic return for the country on the global archery calendar, reestablishing its presence after a long hiatus. This event is expected to attract top archers from across Asia, providing a platform for showcasing talent and fostering international sports diplomacy.

Additional Archery Events Across India

Beyond the Asia Cup, there is more exciting news for Indian archery enthusiasts. Ahmedabad will host the Asian Para Archery Championships in September this year, promoting inclusivity in the sport. Meanwhile, Kolkata has been awarded the South Asian Archery Championships in 2026, with the city last staging an international archery tournament in 2009 during the Asian Archery Grand Prix. These events collectively underscore India's commitment to developing archery at multiple levels.

Busy Domestic and International Calendar

The domestic archery scene is also bustling, with the National Archery Championships scheduled in Shillong this year. Kolkata could potentially host next year's national championships, although this has not been finalized yet. On the international front, Indian archers are gearing up for a packed season. It begins with the Asia Cup stage in Bangkok from March 21 to 26, followed by legs in Iraq and China. The Archery World Cup series will kick off in Puebla, Mexico, in April, offering numerous opportunities for athletes to compete and excel on the world stage.

This series of events positions India as a key player in the global archery landscape, promising enhanced visibility and growth for the sport in the coming years.
