Indian Rally Duo Set for Historic World Rally Championship Debut
From the demanding circuits of India's national rally scene to the challenging asphalt stages of Gran Canaria, Dean Mascarenhas and Gagan Karumbaiah are poised to take the most significant leap of their motorsport careers. The Team TSI Racing pair will make their highly anticipated debut in the FIA World Rally Championship, competing in the WRC3 class at the prestigious Rally Islas Canarias.
A Monumental Challenge Awaits
The upcoming rally presents a formidable test of skill and endurance, featuring 18 special stages spanning 301.30 kilometers. This demanding surface will challenge not only raw speed but also precision driving, patience, and adaptability to unfamiliar conditions. For Dean Mascarenhas, this opportunity represents the culmination of over a decade of persistence and dedication to the sport.
"This puts India on the map at the WRC. It's opened the doors for youngsters back home," Dean remarked, highlighting the broader impact of their participation on Indian motorsport. His journey began with his debut at the K1000 in 2010, and he has since climbed through the ranks, achieving numerous podiums, runner-up finishes, and championship titles across multiple classes. His breakthrough came in 2025 when he secured the INRC Overall Driver's Championship through a season of remarkable consistency.
Two Distinct Paths Converge
While Dean's path has been defined by traditional rally progression, Gagan Karumbaiah's journey has been equally compelling but distinct. With extensive experience in 4x4 off-roading, autocross, and rally driving, he developed a rare breadth of motorsport expertise before settling into the co-driver's seat. His methodical approach and composure under pressure have made him an ideal partner for Dean, with their professional bond strengthening since they began competing together in 2019.
The duo approaches this international competition with clear-eyed understanding of the scale of the challenge. "Our journey has been good, and a lot of things have fallen into place," Dean explained. "It's not just about going out there and driving — a lot of effort has gone into it with an entire team working behind us."
Intensive Preparation and Focus on Precision
In preparation for their world championship debut, the Mangaluru-Kodagu pair has been training extensively in Spain. Their focus has shifted to mastering the critical details that separate competitors at the highest level, particularly refining their pace notes and adapting to the demands of their new vehicle.
"The grind never stops," Dean emphasized. "Wherever we drive, we have to keep practicing. We've been working on our pace notes and understanding and practicing with the new car."
Gagan echoed this commitment to precision, stating: "Pace notes are the key. If you are thorough with the pace note, the speed, what you carry and the approach towards the corner, it will take you to the next level."
A Learning-Focused Approach
For their maiden WRC outing, Dean and Gagan have adopted a pragmatic, learning-focused mindset rather than making bold predictions about results. "The idea is to learn," Dean acknowledged. "You can't go out at the topmost level of rallying and say that you're going to be the best out there. It's not possible because there are a lot of people who have been doing this for years."
The duo, who are skipping the INRC this season to focus on their international campaign, recognize they are entering unfamiliar territory. "We need to learn, adapt and progress," Dean stated. "We can't keep competing only back home."
For Dean Mascarenhas and Gagan Karumbaiah, Rally Islas Canarias represents more than just a debut — it is a powerful statement of intent for Indian motorsport on the global stage.
