Indian Sailing League Launches with Grand Inaugural Event in Shillong
As the Indian Premier League (IPL) prepares to launch another season, a new sporting discipline is entering the arena of franchise-based competition. The inaugural Indian Sailing League is set to commence at the Orchid Water Sports Complex on Umiam Lake in Shillong, Meghalaya, marking a significant expansion of professional sailing in India.
Extensive Participation and Prize Structure
The five-day competition will feature an impressive lineup of 14 franchises and 182 sailors. This includes not only Indian participants but also at least 58 international sailors from diverse countries such as Russia, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka. Competitors will vie for prestigious titles and a substantial total prize pool that exceeds ₹1.5 crore, highlighting the league's ambitious scale.
Competition Categories and Format
The event will showcase Olympic categories including ILCA 6, ILCA 7, and the 420 Class, ensuring high-level competitive standards. Additionally, youth competitions will be held in the ILCA 4 boys and girls categories, as well as the Optimist class, fostering young talent in the sport.
Organized in collaboration with the Meghalaya government's Department of Tourism and the United De Novo Association of Yachting (UDAY), the league promises dynamic race formats. These will rigorously test crews on various elements such as wind conditions, strategic planning, precise maneuvering, and speed, ushering in a new era for competitive sailing in India.

The event boasts a wide age range among participants. David Fan, a 60-year-old sailor from Hong Kong representing Goa Mariners in the ILCA7 category, stands as the most experienced competitor. In contrast, Krishna Venkitachalam, a 12-year-old sailing in the Optimist class for SailX Gorakhpur, is among the youngest, showcasing the league's inclusive appeal.
International Talent and Coaching
International expertise is prominently featured, with Malaysia's leading 420 pair, Danyal Marczqui Rajmat Sharon and Nur Aina Norhazram, spearheading Team Vizag's campaign. They are joined by Russia's top-ranked ILCA 6 sailor, Anastasiia Ivanova, who also serves as a coach. Notably, Ivanova is the only woman coaching a team in the tournament, adding a unique dimension to the event.
