Former England Footballer Joey Barton Remains in Custody After Bail Refusal
Joey Barton, the former England international footballer, will not be released from jail in the near future. He has been denied bail by a court after facing charges related to a serious assault incident that occurred near a golf club in Merseyside. This decision follows an event where a man was left severely injured and required hospitalization.
Court Details and Victim's Condition
The court proceedings revealed that the victim, identified as Kevin Lynch, is currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital. He has sustained injuries to his face and ribs, with medical professionals reporting his condition as stable. However, there are significant concerns that he might lose vision in one eye due to the severity of the assault. Given the gravity of the case, Barton has been ordered to remain in custody until his next scheduled hearing on April 7 at Liverpool Crown Court.
Incident Overview and Local Response
The alleged assault has sparked considerable concern within the local community, particularly after reports emerged of a substantial police presence at the Huyton and Prescot Golf Club. Law enforcement officials have actively sought assistance from nearby residents, requesting any available footage or information that could aid in the investigation. This includes potential doorbell camera recordings that might provide crucial evidence.
Legal Proceedings and Judge's Decision
During the hearing at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court, Judge David Potter presided over the case and determined that Joey Barton should not be granted bail. Barton is formally charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm. Despite his application for bail, the request was rejected based on the serious nature of the allegations.
Prosecutor Chelsea Kearns provided details to the court, explaining that Kevin Lynch, aged 51, had been socializing and consuming alcohol with Barton and others at the golf club on March 8. What began as a typical evening escalated into a tense situation. Kearns described how the two men engaged in a "heated discussion" that eventually turned physical. According to witness accounts, they later moved outside, where an individual was observed being "punched, kicked and stamped on."
During the alleged attack, Barton is reported to have told Lynch, "You should have behaved." Following the incident, Lynch was transported to a hospital with critical injuries. While his overall condition is now stable, the damage inflicted on his eye raises the possibility of permanent impairment.
Additional Suspect and Investigation Updates
Another individual, Gary O’Grady, aged 50, has also been charged in connection with the same incident. In contrast to Barton, O’Grady has been released on bail as the police continue their investigation. Authorities had previously cordoned off sections of the area surrounding the golf club, with officers collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses to build a comprehensive case.
