Khelo India Tribal Games Launch in Raipur with Massive Participation
Even as Royal Challengers Bengaluru confirmed on Tuesday that they will play two of their Indian Premier League home matches in Raipur, the city's spotlight has firmly shifted to the inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games. Scheduled from March 25 to April 3, this groundbreaking event has assembled young tribal athletes from across the nation, marking a significant milestone in India's sports development.
Extensive Competition Across Multiple Disciplines
Approximately 2,300 athletes will compete vigorously across seven core disciplines: archery, athletics, football, hockey, swimming, weightlifting, and wrestling. These competitions will award a total of 106 gold medals, showcasing elite talent from tribal communities. The event is strategically distributed across multiple venues in Chhattisgarh, with Raipur hosting hockey, weightlifting, football, archery, and swimming events. Meanwhile, athletics will be held in Jagdalpur, and wrestling competitions will take place at Gandhi Stadium in Ambikapur.
In addition to these medal events, the 10-day competition will feature demonstrations of traditional sports such as mallakhamb and kabaddi, celebrating India's rich cultural heritage alongside modern athletic pursuits.
Strong Endorsement from Sports Veterans
Former India hockey player Lazarus Barla, currently serving as manager of the Odisha men's hockey team in Raipur, enthusiastically praised the initiative. "The concept of making India fit is excellent, and incorporating tribal games into this framework is even more commendable," Barla stated. He emphasized that numerous people from tribal regions actively play and follow these sports, making the launch of the Khelo India Tribal Games a particularly valuable development. Barla, who belongs to the Oraon tribe, highlighted the importance of such platforms for tribal athletes.
Odisha has fielded a formidable contingent for the games, including experienced players like Abhishek Lakra, a member of the 2021 Junior Men's Hockey World Cup squad, in the men's team, and Ajmina Kujur, who participated in the 2022 Junior Women's Hockey World Cup, in the women's side. However, Barla cautioned that the tournament's long-term success hinges on providing tangible incentives for athletes, such as job opportunities, clear pathways to national teams, and exposure trips abroad. For the present, the primary focus remains on talent identification and systematic development.
Leadership Perspectives on Tribal Sports Development
Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey reinforced this vision in an official statement, declaring, "All our tribal players and children should showcase their talent through sports, represent the country, and build their careers." This sentiment was echoed by men's 100m and 200m national record holder Animesh Kujur, who underscored the potential of such events to expand the reach of sports across diverse communities.
Although Kujur will not be competing in this edition, the aspiration is that this platform will inspire and nurture many more athletes like him, fostering a new generation of tribal sports stars. The convergence of elite IPL cricket and grassroots tribal sports in Raipur symbolizes a dynamic moment for Indian athletics, blending commercial spectacle with inclusive development.
