Khelo India Tribal Games Debut with Impressive Success in Raipur

The inaugural edition of the Khelo India Tribal Games, currently underway in Raipur, has achieved remarkable success, drawing athletes from the most remote corners of the country who have captured attention with their outstanding performances. This event marks the seventh installment in the Khelo India series, following the Youth Games, University Games, Para Games, Winter Games, Beach Games, and Water Sports Festival. The government is now planning to expand this initiative further.

Expansion to Northeast Games Announced

During an interaction with TOI, Mayank Srivastava, Deputy Director General of the Khelo India Division at the Sports Authority of India (SAI), revealed plans for an additional event. "Earlier, we used to conduct six games. Now, the sports minister has suggested that sports should reach areas that were geographically less accessible to athletes. We will thus soon start the Northeast Games as well," Srivastava stated. He emphasized the importance of extending sports to communities that have historically faced barriers to entering mainstream sporting arenas.

Strong Performances from Tribal Athletes

The athletes from tribal regions have demonstrated exceptional skill, particularly in weightlifting. Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram each secured eight medals, while Assam led with nine medals. In swimming, athletes from Assam also excelled, winning a total of nine medals. These performances highlight the untapped potential in these areas and provide a platform for athletes to gain recognition.

As these athletes aim to maintain their strong showing in the coming days, they also hope to attract the attention of talent scouts and secure spots in training academies. Srivastava explained the talent identification process: "We have a Khelo India Talent Identification and Development vertical. Once talent is spotted, a basic assessment is conducted. Those who are selected are then admitted to the National Centres of Excellence under the Sports Authority of India, where they receive training under qualified coaches."

In addition to training, selected athletes receive a monthly stipend to support their development, ensuring they have the resources needed to pursue their sporting careers.

Challenges and Future Goals

Despite the intense competition, a notable gap remains: the results from these events are not yet ratified by international associations. Srivastava addressed this issue, stating, "The beginning has been made, and we will create an orderly structure. Soon, you will see a competitive level emerge." He noted the complexity of the international sporting structure, where federations consider multiple factors before granting recognition to competitions and accepting results for official records.

However, Srivastava clarified that international ratification is not an immediate priority. "That is not an impediment, because our focus is on grassroots development. First, the basics must be put in place. Athletes need exposure and clear pathways and opportunities, and that is what we are providing," he added. This approach underscores the government's commitment to building a strong foundation for sports at the local level before seeking global validation.

The success of the Khelo India Tribal Games in Raipur not only celebrates athletic achievement but also paves the way for future initiatives like the Northeast Games, fostering inclusivity and growth in Indian sports.
