Kolkata Municipal Corporation Transfers Deshbandhu Park Pool to Bengal Amateur Swimming Association
In a significant move to bolster aquatic sports in the region, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has officially handed over the Deshbandhu Park swimming pool in north Kolkata to the Bengal Amateur Swimming Association (BASA). This transfer grants BASA exclusive access to a dedicated Olympic-size facility, marking a pivotal step in enhancing training infrastructure for swimmers across West Bengal.
Historic Legacy and Future Prospects
Established in 1938, BASA has a rich history of nurturing elite swimmers, including notable figures such as Bula Choudhury, an Arjuna Awardee and Padma Shri recipient who became the first Asian woman to swim the English Channel twice. Other distinguished alumni include Supriya Mondal, who represented India in the Youth Olympic Games and secured a bronze medal in the 200m backstroke at the 55th Singapore National Age Group Championships, and Akbar Ali Mir, an early international competitor for India.
Traditionally, swimmers in the state trained at various pools and clubs affiliated with BASA. In recent years, pre-competition camps were conducted at Subhas Sarobar. With the handover of the Deshbandhu Park pool, measuring 50 meters by 25 meters, these camps will now be centralized at this new venue, streamlining training efforts and fostering a more cohesive aquatic community.
Strategic Initiatives and Digital Integration
Kankan Panigrahi, secretary of BASA, emphasized the strategic importance of this development. "The Deshbandhu Park swimming complex will play a vital role in strengthening the aquatic ecosystem of Bengal," he stated. "BASA plans to organise state championships, specialised training camps, and structured talent identification programmes at the facility. We are also focusing on developing the venue into a major aquatic training hub for north Kolkata. In the long run, BASA aims to upgrade the facility to host high-level competitions and advanced coaching programmes."
In addition to the physical infrastructure upgrade, BASA has launched a digital platform and website, inaugurated by president Debasish Kumar. This initiative aims to enhance communication, streamline athlete registration, improve event management, provide competition updates, and increase public access to swimming activities statewide. It represents a new era of transparency and digital integration for the association, aligning with modern technological advancements in sports administration.
Impact on Swimming Development in Bengal
The handover is expected to significantly impact swimming development in West Bengal by:
- Providing a centralized, Olympic-standard training facility for aspiring swimmers.
- Enabling BASA to host state-level championships and identify talent more effectively.
- Fostering a dedicated hub for aquatic sports in north Kolkata, potentially attracting more participants and investments.
- Supporting long-term goals of upgrading the venue for national and international competitions.
This move underscores a commitment to revitalizing swimming infrastructure and promoting the sport at grassroots and elite levels, building on BASA's storied legacy while embracing future opportunities for growth and excellence.
