Spain star Lamine Yamal has gone viral ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but not because of anything he did on a football pitch. Instead, the 18-year-old Barcelona sensation found himself at the centre of social media attention after being spotted shopping at a Walmart in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, just days before Spain begin their World Cup campaign.
The video, which quickly spread across social media, showed one of world football's biggest young stars casually walking through the store, completing his shopping and leaving with a trolley full of everyday essentials and snacks. Yamal later shared a series of photographs on Instagram documenting his early days in the United States, including images of himself outside the Walmart with his shopping cart after the trip.
Viral Walmart Trip Catches Fans by Surprise
The footage, recorded by a shopper inside the Georgia store shortly after Yamal had checked out, quickly spread across social media. The Spain star was seen casually browsing the aisles and leaving with a trolley full of purchases in the company of two apparent teammates. Despite being one of the biggest names heading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Yamal seemed to attract little attention, with fellow shoppers largely unaware that the teenage sensation was shopping among them. Part of that may have been because Yamal was not wearing any official Spain training gear while shopping, making him blend into the crowd far more easily than he would at a stadium or training ground.
The location also played a role. Fort Oglethorpe sits around 18 miles from Chattanooga, Tennessee, where Spain have established their World Cup base camp, meaning the Barcelona winger was away from the immediate spotlight surrounding the national team. The scenes also highlighted a wider reality surrounding the tournament. While the World Cup has arrived in North America, football has not yet completely dominated everyday life in many host cities, allowing even one of the sport's biggest stars to move around relatively unnoticed.
Spain Preparing for World Cup Debut
While the Walmart visit generated plenty of online attention, Spain's focus remains firmly on their opening World Cup fixture. Luis de la Fuente's side will begin their Group H campaign on June 15 against Cape Verde before later facing Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. Spain are among the favourites to challenge for the title after arriving in North America as reigning European champions, and Yamal is expected to be one of the team's most important players if they are to make a deep run in the tournament. Until the opening match, Spain will continue training at their state-of-the-art base at Baylor School in Chattanooga.
Injury Recovery Remains a Major Talking Point
Despite the relaxed scenes in Georgia, questions remain over Yamal's fitness ahead of the tournament. The teenager has been recovering from a hamstring injury suffered while playing for Barcelona on April 22, an injury that brought his club season to an early end. His availability has been one of the biggest topics surrounding Spain's preparations. Earlier this week, head coach Luis de la Fuente expressed confidence that the winger would be fit enough to feature in the opener against Cape Verde. However, reports suggest Barcelona are keen for Spain to manage his workload carefully during the early stages of the competition.
According to those reports, the Catalan club would prefer Yamal to play no more than 15 minutes against Cape Verde as he continues his recovery. Barcelona are also understood to favour a limited role of between 45 and 60 minutes in Spain's second group-stage match against Saudi Arabia six days later. The hope is that, provided there are no further setbacks, the restrictions could be eased by the time Spain face Uruguay in their final group match on June 27.
