LIV Golf's International Series Sets Sights on Indian Open and Global Growth
In a significant development for the golfing world, Rahul Singh, the head of the International Series at LIV Golf, has reaffirmed the organization's ambitious plans while addressing ongoing speculation about its long-term future. Speaking on the sidelines of the $2 million Singapore Open, Singh confidently stated, "All systems cool," emphasizing a positive outlook amidst the swirling rumors.
Expansion Strategy and National Open Integration
Singh detailed LIV Golf's strategic focus on absorbing National Opens into the International Series, which is co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour. This approach has already seen the inclusion of prestigious events like the Hong Kong Open, Singapore Open, and Philippine Open. He highlighted the importance of this strategy, noting that it aims to bring top-tier golf to diverse regions and enhance the global appeal of the sport.
Looking ahead, Singh announced that the second edition of the International Series India will be hosted by Prestige Golfshire in Bengaluru this October. He confirmed the participation of Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri and hinted at the possibility of additional high-profile players joining the event, sparking excitement among fans.
Courting the Indian Open and Player Perspectives
In a notable move, Singh expressed a strong desire for the Indian Open to become part of the International Series. "We would love for the Indian Open to become part of the series," he said, while acknowledging its current co-sanctioning by the Indian Golf Union and DP World Tour. He emphasized that the decision ultimately rests with the IGU, stating, "If they speak with us, we welcome the conversations."
Singh pointed out that the Indian Open has not consistently featured the best Indian players alongside global talent, a gap he hopes to address. This comes amid challenges in the Indian golf scene, such as the dispute between the Professional Golf Tour of India and the new Indian Golf Premier League, which has affected players like Gaganjeet Bhullar, the last Indian to win on a top tour in 2023.
Indian golfer Karandeep Kochhar, who recently performed well at the Philippine Golf Championship and International Series Japan, adopted a pragmatic stance. He expressed contentment with opportunities on the Asian Tour but called for solutions to ensure top players like Bhullar and SSP Chawrasia can compete in major events for the greater good of Indian golf.
Singapore Open Highlights and Global Aspirations
The Singapore Open, held at the picturesque Serapong course with views of the cityscape and Singapore Straits, serves as a backdrop for these discussions. The event features seven IGPL players and four PGTI players, including notable names like Bhullar, SSP Chawrasia, Jeev Milkha Singh, and Shiv Kapur, all vying for success.
A symbol of golf's rich traditions, the Claret Jug, is displayed in the clubhouse, reminding players of the ultimate aspirations in the sport. The top two finishers at the Singapore Open, if not already qualified, will earn spots in The 154th Open at Royal Birkdale in July, adding a layer of prestige to the competition.
Singh concluded by reiterating LIV Golf's buoyant outlook, promising to bring firepower to every country they enter, and reinforcing the International Series' role in driving the National Open strategy forward. As the golf world watches, these developments signal a dynamic shift in the sport's landscape, with India poised to play a key role in LIV Golf's expanding vision.
