Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya felicitated both the Indian men's and women's hockey teams at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) headquarters in New Delhi on Monday for their outstanding performances at the recently concluded Under-18 Asia Cup in Japan.
Men's Team Crowned Champions
The Indian U-18 men's hockey team, led by captain Ketan Kushwaha, emerged as champions of the U-18 Asia Cup 2026 after defeating the host nation Japan 4-1 in the final held in Kakamigahara on Friday. In recognition of their achievement, the Union Sports Minister presented a cheque of Rs 61.5 lakh to the men's team.
Women's Team Secures Bronze
The Indian U-18 women's hockey team, captained by Sweety Kujur, clinched the bronze medal at the tournament by registering a commanding 3-0 victory over South Korea in the bronze medal match. Dr Mandaviya handed the women's team a cheque of Rs 21 lakh as an encouragement for their performance, according to an official press release.
Minister's Words of Encouragement
Dr Mandaviya shared motivating words with both teams, stating, "I would like to congratulate both teams for the hard work they have put in to bring laurels to the country. The entire nation is proud of you. I want to tell you that this is just the beginning. There is no substitute for hard work. Someone who has scored 13 goals should aim to score 15 or more. Someone who has saved 10 goals should strive to not let the opponents score even one. Whether you study or play sports, there must be total commitment. Keep performing to the best of your abilities and make your parents and well-wishers happy; that should be your aim."
Government's Commitment to Sports
Mandaviya emphasized that the Government of India is fully committed to transforming the nation into a sports superpower, as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Individual Felicitations
The Sports Minister also honored the top scorers from both teams: Ashish Tani Purti from the men's side and Nousheen Naz from the women's side. Additionally, the best goalkeeper of the tournament, Ayush Rajak, who saved 10 goals, was felicitated.
Coaches Recognized
Dr Mandaviya further felicitated former Indian hockey captains Rani Rampal and Sardara Singh, who served as coaches for the women's and men's teams, respectively, during the Under-18 Asia Cup.
