Conor McGregor is speaking like a man who has finally secured what he desired. After years of setbacks, injuries, public ambiguity, and stalled comeback efforts, the former two-division UFC champion states that his long-awaited return is no longer uncertain. McGregor is officially set to face Max Holloway in the main event of UFC 329 on July 11 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, and this time, the Irish star appears fully committed to both the fight and the business aspects surrounding it.
McGregor's Contract Update Ahead of UFC Comeback
McGregor's relationship with the UFC has often fluctuated between admiration and frustration, especially as the promotion transitioned into a new media era with Paramount+. However, ahead of his comeback, McGregor made it clear that the financial negotiations finally concluded to his satisfaction. During an appearance on Mac Energy, McGregor revealed his contentment with the deal that brings him back to the Octagon after nearly five years away.
"It's like a musical – music to my ears, it is. I'm out so long, five years," McGregor said. "My body's fresh. My mind is sharp. I'm ready to come back. I've got a great opponent. I've got a great deal off the UFC. I'm very, very happy. They honored me, finally." McGregor did not elaborate on the contract details.
The Rematch with Max Holloway
McGregor defeated Holloway by unanimous decision in August 2013, but the rematch occurs under vastly different circumstances. Their first encounter was at Featherweight, whereas UFC 329 will take place at welterweight. McGregor believes his evolution as a fighter will be evident. "July 11, and the opponent is a man I've beaten before in Max Holloway. He's an established fighter, an accomplished fighter, former UFC world champion, multiple time. So this is a quality opponent, and our last bout was martial arts mastery by yours truly, so I plan on doing it again."
Structure of McGregor's New UFC Contract
The structure of McGregor's current UFC deal has become a major talking point. According to veteran MMA reporter Ariel Helwani, McGregor did not sign a contract extension despite UFC interest in a longer agreement. Instead, this Holloway fight is reportedly one of the final two bouts remaining on his current deal. This could provide enormous leverage if McGregor returns successfully and proves he can still headline major events in the streaming era.
"With the streaming world, with Netflix, with Amazon, all these people paying big top dollar for sport, could you imagine a Conor McGregor fight on the open market? What do you think Netflix would pay for that? They would pay a lot of money," Helwani said.
McGregor's Mindset and Preparation
McGregor's confidence has never waned, even after the severe leg injury he sustained against Dustin Poirier in 2021. He admitted the recovery forced him to rethink his mental preparation for fights and worst-case scenarios inside the cage. "Now as I've become a lot more experienced in the game, I actually work backward toward the perfect scenario," McGregor explained. He described how he now prepares for injuries and difficult moments before they happen, believing survival and adaptability are as important as highlight-reel knockouts.
For UFC fans, this mindset may be the most intriguing aspect. The swagger remains, as does the business instinct, but this version of McGregor also appears more calculated than before.
