Messi Honoured with Princess of Asturias Sports Award

Inter Miami CF star and reigning world champion Lionel Messi has been awarded the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, becoming the first individual footballer to receive this prestigious honour. The award, presented by the Princess of Asturias Foundation, recognizes outstanding achievements in fields such as arts, literature, social sciences, scientific and technical research, international cooperation, and sport.

The jury, led by foundation president Teresa Perales, voted unanimously to honour Messi for his exceptional career and contributions both on and off the pitch. Upon receiving the award, Messi expressed his gratitude: "The truth is that for me it is a great pride to be able to receive this recognition because of the importance it has and for the fact that it is recognised not only for what I do on the pitch but also off the pitch. I am very happy and very grateful."

A Career of Unmatched Success

Messi's career is decorated with numerous titles and individual accolades. Internationally, he led Argentina to victory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, along with Copa America triumphs in 2021 and 2024, and an Olympic gold medal in Beijing. At the club level, Messi won 10 La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League trophies with FC Barcelona, and has added the 2025 MLS Cup, the 2024 Supporters' Shield, and the 2023 Leagues Cup with Inter Miami CF.

Individual Honours

Individually, Messi has won eight Ballon d'Or awards, two MLS MVP awards, and was named La Liga MVP nine times. His recognition by the Princess of Asturias Foundation places him among previous winners such as Rafael Nadal, Michael Schumacher, Serena Williams, and Eliud Kipchoge.

Messi's impact extends beyond his playing career, as he is involved in various philanthropic efforts through the Leo Messi Foundation, which supports children's health and education. The Princess of Asturias Award highlights not only his sporting excellence but also his positive influence off the field.
