National Para Athletics Championship Commences with Grand Scale in Bhubaneswar
The prestigious National Para Athletics Championship is officially underway at the iconic Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, marking a significant event in India's sporting calendar. This four-day tournament, running from March 19 to 21, has drawn an impressive participation of 1,460 para-athletes representing 28 states across the nation. In addition to state teams, the competition includes contingents from the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB), all vying for glory in a total of 145 medal events.
Elite Paralympians and Distinguished Athletes Take Center Stage
The championship boasts a stellar lineup of world-class para-athletes, headlined by triple Paralympic medalist Mariyappan Thangavelu. Thangavelu, who has achieved gold in Rio, silver in Tokyo, and bronze at the Paris Games, is set to showcase his exceptional talent once again. Joining him is double Paralympic gold medalist Sumit Antil, fresh from his victory at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in New Delhi, where he secured gold in the men's Javelin throw (F43/F44/F64) with a remarkable throw of 69.25 meters.
Other notable participants include Navdeep Singh (F41), Praveen Kumar (T64), Preethi Pal, Shailesh Kumar, Rakeshbhai Bhatt, Rohit Kumar, Devendra Singh Gurjar, Poonam, Lakshmi, Jayanti Behera, Yogesh Kathuniya, Dharambir, and Pranav Soorma, among others. This gathering of Arjuna Awardees, Asian Games medalists, and World Championship medalists underscores the high level of competition and the championship's role in promoting para sports excellence.
Opening Ceremony and Key Objectives of the Championship
The opening ceremony was held on Wednesday at Kalinga Stadium, inaugurated by Suryabanshi Suraj, the Minister for Sports and Youth Services of Odisha. Beyond providing a platform for elite performers and emerging talents, this championship serves a crucial purpose in the selection process for upcoming international events. According to an official release, it will play a vital role in identifying probables for the Asian Para Games scheduled in Aichi–Nagoya, Japan, from October 18 to 24, as well as various other international competitions.
Satyanarayana, the para-athletics chairman of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI), emphasized the event's focus on nurturing rural talents and promoting para sports nationwide. During a press conference in Bhubaneswar, he stated, "National coaching camps will be conducted for focused training and development of the athletes who are probables to qualify for the upcoming Asian Games and Commonwealth Games."
Organizational Details and Regional Participation
The tournament is organized by the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) in collaboration with the Sports & Youth Services Department of the Government of Odisha and the Para Sports Association of Odisha. A total of 40 athletes from Odisha are participating, led by Suchitra Parida, the national record holder in the F55 Javelin throw event. Defending champions Haryana have fielded the largest contingent, highlighting the competitive spirit and widespread interest in para athletics across India.
