Odia Engineer Achieves Global Marathon Milestone, Shares Journey with Son

In an inspiring display of determination and familial bonding, a 57-year-old engineer originally from Odisha has successfully completed the prestigious set of six World Marathon Majors. Tathagata Sahoo, who resides in Yokohama, Japan, crossed the finish line at the Boston Marathon in the United States on Monday, conquering the challenging 42.2-kilometer course and marking his achievement of running all six major global marathons.

From Health Diagnosis to Global Runner

Tathagata Sahoo's remarkable journey into long-distance running began as a personal health mission. He revealed that he started running after being diagnosed with Type-2 diabetes, viewing physical activity as a crucial part of managing his condition. "I began with walking gradually before progressing to long-distance running," Sahoo explained, highlighting his methodical approach to building endurance and transforming his lifestyle through marathon training.

The Six Major Marathon Circuit

Over several years, Sahoo has systematically participated in the world's most renowned marathon events. His marathon portfolio includes:

  • Tokyo Marathon (2019) – His initial major marathon experience
  • New York City Marathon (2023) – The iconic race through the five boroughs
  • Berlin Marathon (2024) – Known for its fast, flat course
  • London Marathon (2025) – The historic race through the British capital
  • Chicago Marathon (2025) – Where he first ran alongside his son
  • Boston Marathon (2026) – The challenging final piece of his six-major achievement

In addition to these landmark races, Sahoo has run the Tokyo Marathon again this year and participated in numerous races across Japan to continually build his stamina and competitive edge.

A Father-Son Running Partnership

The Boston Marathon held special significance for Sahoo as he was accompanied by his 17-year-old son, Mikul, who has Down syndrome. While Sahoo tackled the full marathon distance, his son participated in the 5-kilometer race, creating a shared experience that has deepened their bond.

"Running started as a personal transformation, but with my son, it has become something much more meaningful — a journey we can share together," Sahoo expressed emotionally. This wasn't their first joint running event; the father-son duo had previously run together at the Chicago Marathon in October 2025.

Overcoming Challenges Together

Mikul was particularly excited about running in Boston, experiencing another new city through their shared athletic pursuit. For Sahoo, the Boston course presented significant difficulties. "For me, Boston was a bit tough as the route is challenging even for professionals," he admitted, acknowledging the demanding nature of the historic race known for its Heartbreak Hill and variable New England weather conditions.

This achievement represents more than just athletic accomplishment for the Sahoo family. It demonstrates how personal health challenges can transform into opportunities for growth, connection, and shared experiences that transcend physical limitations. Tathagata Sahoo's journey from diabetes diagnosis to completing the world's six major marathons, while including his son with Down syndrome in the process, serves as an inspiring example of resilience, family support, and the transformative power of determination.
